Be advised: this thread is not for serious in-depth discussion of weighty topics (we have a link for that), this thread is not for anything Culture War related. This thread is for Fun. You got jokes? Share 'em. You got silly questions? Ask 'em.
What is this place?
This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a
court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to
optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.
The weekly Culture War threads host the most
controversial topics and are the most visible aspect of The Motte. However, many other topics are
appropriate here. We encourage people to post anything related to science, politics, or philosophy;
if in doubt, post!
Check out The Vault for an archive of old quality posts.
You are encouraged to crosspost these elsewhere.
Why are you called The Motte?
A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently,
it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey",
originally identified by
philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial
but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens
this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for
the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired
propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."
On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
New post guidelines
If you're posting something that isn't related to the culture war, we encourage you to post a thread for it.
A submission statement is highly appreciated, but isn't necessary for text posts or links to largely-text posts
such as blogs or news articles; if we're unsure of the value of your post, we might remove it until you add a
submission statement. A submission statement is required for non-text sources (videos, podcasts, images).
Culture war posts go in the culture war thread; all links must either include a submission statement or
significant commentary. Bare links without those will be removed.
If in doubt, please post it!

Funnily enough, drinking plain black coffee every day doesn't mean that you know anything about coffee. I ordered a latte in a cafe a few months ago and was surprised to find it wasn't sweet at all, just creamy and bitter, but I really liked the latte art. It was a leaf.
So, a couple coffee questions:
I like the smell of coffee, but I hate the taste of it. I've been drinking cocoa since primary school and I don't see a reason to switch.
Try a taste of vanilla extract. It’s nothing at all like how it smells. When my mother was baking cookies and brownies when I was a kid and it was in the mix of things I told her I wanted to drink the bottle of it and she goes, “Oh no you don’t…” And she was right. It’s one of the most disgusting things you will ever taste.

If I’m ordering out for coffee, it’s likely due to needing caffeine, so a triple-shot espresso is my go-to.
If I’m in a more fey and mellow mood, I confess to enjoying a nice cafe latte with sugar.
In my experience, the only way I’ve ever gotten non-bitter coffee is by using freshly ground beans.

Cappuccino for me, on the rare occasion I drink coffee. Espresso if you're in a rush in Europe. Yes, it's totally normal to drink espresso with lots of sugar, and a good place will also give you a little cup of water to wash it down. What makes coffee a "girl drink" is adding pumps of syrup or weird sweet flavours to it, outside of countries that have traditional flavoured sweet coffees like Venezuela or Thailand.
Speaking of which - half and half? Americans, what is wrong with you? I'd rather drink the most scorched black coffee on the planet than have whatever that is floating curdled in my drink.
You think that's bad? They use what they call "creamer", which is to cream what margarine is to butter.

Cappuccino! It's more skill and equipment intense than i can cheaply replicate at home. It's not sweet, but it has a nuique flavor that I enjoy when it's done well.
There's one coffee shop that does a good job of sourcing interesting beans so I'll get a black coffee there to try the new coffee.

When I (male) go out for coffee it's typically a cappuccino or latte (I still can't tell the difference in taste), with a pastry alongside so I don't put any sugar in.

I also tried a cold brew on a separate occasion, but it cost $7 and seemed to taste worse than plain, hot, black coffee. Sad. Next time I go to a cafe I'm going to try a regular latte again, but if I don't start liking it more, I'm probably just going to start ordering plain black coffee too.

Cafe au lait. As far as lattes and cappuccinos go, I tend to go for whatever's being offered as a seasonal special. I'm not there to give a damn about anyone who might snoot their cocks at me, I'm there to have an enjoyable caffienated beverage. I will say that a Sweater Weather is superior over a PSL, though, IMO.
I didn't even consider that somebody could snoot their cock at me for this. Horrifying. I'm never going to a cafe again.
I'm sorry, but what?

Cold brew with a tiny bit of half and half, assuming it's not outrageously priced (I'm not paying $7 before tip for it). Some places have very good cold brew with interesting flavor profiles. Some places are dogshit.
I don't get flavors in things because I want to taste the coffee. Given the very popular milkshakes that are sold as coffee at places like Dutch Bros, many people do not care for the taste of coffee itself. I don't get added sugar because I try to avoid that (aside from what's in dairy I might add). I like espresso on ice on occasion but it's intense.
I don't eat morton straight from the canister with a spoon, but I certainly like salt.

I'm pretty sure actual coffee snobs would judge me poorly, and I do get a plain black drip about 50% of the time when the wife and I go out for coffee. That being said:
Flat white
During this particular season, I do personally go for the PSL. People can judge me if they want for ordering a basic bitch girl drink.
