True, but the theory isn't that the beams melted, it's that they weakened due to the temperature. Structural steel loses half its room-temperature strength at 500 °C, and the chart I can find doesn't go much past that. Structural factors of safety are high, but not that high, and it's unsurprising IMO that they'd fail at "extended structural fire" temperatures, which is why we mandate automatic sprinklers in such buildings these days.

My fantasy system is one where the right to buy almost any gun is licensed, but the licensing procedure is devolved to a local County Level gun club.
Virtually every gun owner I know thinks that some people shouldn't have guns, they just don't trust the government to make that determination. The anti-gun fanatics and the local range guys would agree on 95-99% of cases, but we can't get there because of agency and trust problems. If the anti-gun crowd granted gun owners the right to self-police gun licensing they would get most of what they wanted without a fight.
This is why one of my favorite policies is when I went for my CCW, I had to write down three references. At the time I thought, wow, what kind of dumbass policy is this, all I need to do to have a gun is have three friends? Then I heard of so many people who either can't find three people who will say they should have a gun and never apply; or who somehow manage to write down people who, when contacted, actively say they shouldn't have a gun! And while that's a minority of the people who shouldn't have guns, they definitely shouldn't have guns.
I'd want to see the same thing with gun clubs. To have a ccw or to buy certain classes of firearms, you have to be a member in good standing and spend time at your local gun club. This would require interacting with other people at the local gun club, who would naturally notice shitbirds or whackadoos or terrorists or the criminally insane in those interactions much more effectively than will the government.

I think that was definitely true for the first Trump admin, one of the many personnel problems it had. But my reading of the tea leaves is that Vance is absolutely being groomed as Trump's successor- he is being sent out to do the sort of foundational policy making that you wouldn't fob off on the average do-nothing VP. Vance's speech at the Munich Security Conference is one of biggest moments in international relations of the decade, fundamentally changing the relationship between the US and EU, and full of lines that I would imagine Trump himself would have loved to drop, and yet JD is the one doing it.
Also, Vance is low key probably the smartest (in terms of IQ) major figure in American politics today, which is always a plus for his future prospects.

Huh? I'm totally lost: one of Trump's defining political characteristics over his decade in politics is his lack of successors. That's why Butler, PA was so crazy: everyone knew that if Trump died the policy direction of the United States would change. And it would have! The entire world economy would be in a different place today if Trump hadn't turned left at the last second.
Where Biden died on the job, and no one even noticed, and on the ballot he was replaced by Harris with no real change in policy plans, and if Harris hadn't taken the nomination we have a list of generic "qualified" Democrats pages long who would all implement more or less the same policies. Romney, McCain, Dubya, Dole all had pretty similar policy platforms, as did many of their primary competitors. Trump? No one has his policy platform, except inasmuch as they copy it from him.
In a decade in office, Trump has done nothing to groom a successor publicly as the "next one up."

That doesn't explain why its female dominated now though. Medicine and law used to be male dominated. Now women make up a majority of new doctors and lawyers. These things can and do change.
A better explanation is that nursing, a caring profession, is majority female because all caring professions are majority-female, because women enjoy caring (for obvious biological reasons relating to maternity).

I don't pay a lot of attention to gun rights since it's not a particularly salient issue for me, but I'm softly intrinsically in favor of 2A rights. That said, gun advocates routinely make terrible arguments that alienate me from their views. This post is a good example of that.
The core issue here is that 40 years ago is a long time and there should probably be some automatic statute of limitations for psychiatric stays to fall off your record. Losing rights because of that seems wrong to me, but 2A advocates can't help themselves and go way further:

There's that absolutist SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED ideology floating around, where any violation of 2A rights is perceived as abhorrent, and thus worthy of maximum outrage. Everyone implicitly agrees with judicial ideology that rights aren't absolute in other regards, as there's no great controversy around e.g. inciting violence being illegal despite the existence of the first amendment. It's the duty of gun rights advocates to show that any given restriction is unreasonable, and I'm sure a lot of them are, but many advocates seem to want to skip this step in favor of leaping to indignant outrage whenever an article like this pops up

The facts of this case make it clear the guy is just bringing insufficient evidence. The guy's involuntary committal was violent, which ought to raise the bar for expungement. Then all he brings are a single psychiatrist's evaluation report that wasn't particularly sympathetic (The doctor found T.B. "very talkative," "shaky/trembling," "feeling angry," in "too much pain," and experiencing "memory problems." In his August 14, 2023 evaluation, Dr. Dada diagnosed T.B. with "an adjustment disorder and anxiety,") and an irrelevant NP report. Like, really? This man is your martyr?

Maybe Eric could scratch out a future riding on daddy's coattails like a populist version of Jeb Bush, but people like JD Vance and even still Ron Desantis are more well positioned to lead that movement.
The more interesting question to me is: would Eric or Don Jr. draw enough attention to fatally weaken another MAGA candidate and throw the race into confusion? Trumpism has always had multiple facets: some people like him because he's a fighter who wins for traditional conservative causes like reducing the size of government or abortion issues, others like him as an explicit repudiation of the prior GOP consensus on issues like foreign intervention and tariffs, still others just like Trump personally as a celebrity showman.
A TrumpSon run would almost certainly capture significant quantities of credibility on the third leg, and probably carry more credibility on the particular mix of traditional Republican policies and MAGA policies than most older line GOP candidates like Rubio or Desantis. A Trumpson run would also be ruinous to Vance, as it would rob Vance of the title of Heir.
Even if neither Eric nor Don Jr. can win, and I don't particularly think they can as they haven't thus far shown the kind of talent that would get them over the finish line, their run could still be important. Which is why they're NEVER going to say they aren't running: the threat of entering the race, even if only for a quixotic Connor Roy spoiler run, is leverage. And the Trump's are old-school moguls, they never let go of leverage*. So whether they actually plan to run or not, they'll hang the threat of a run over Vance and Desantis, and demand loyalty and service in exchange.
*I personally remain convinced that Trump's entire 2020 election theft bit was a clash of worldviews. In real estate, when you have a claim, even a weak claim, it represents leverage, and you can get your counterparty to negotiate and give you something for it. You never let it lapse for nothing. Trump thought he could cash out the vague election theft allegations for something from Biden's handlers; Biden's handlers don't think that way and wanted Trump gone so they weren't in the mood to play. In his efforts to hang onto the bit, Trump lost control of it, and wound up with a lot of things happening that did not benefit him at all.

Agree on all points. The speculative exit economy that ruined software follwoed mma. Dana is a scum who should have his assetes liquidated for lobbying and stealing money from fighters whilst never having done anything more than cardio kickboxing. UFC did not save MMA, it would have risen from Japan, they just made it worse via monopoly. They just wanted to sell it and the things like standard uniforms and stuff was just a way to convince investors
Like, you ask me, the entire point of UFC is to set up the most interesting fights/matchups possible and encourage the top contenders to fight as hard as possible for a win, and generally avoid safe, riskless approaches. Big purses and other monetary incentives are a good method. Bring in the best talent from across the globe and get them to give their best performance.
That is a cover for thier real incentive which is to sell tv rights to ESPN as PPVs keep sinking in the gutter. The Ali act that saves boxing cannot exist in MMA as fighters cannot unionize, this makes the fights worse as Dana and co dont want you to get too popular like mcgregor or want any independence like Fedor. They just want people who will take lifec hanging brain damage for 10k show and 10k win. Not a surprise they are business partners with another entity that loses relevance everyday, WWE.
But also the actual fighting is getting to a point where the 'optimal' style is somewhat predetermined. Unless you're a talented kickbox-wrestle-jitsu practitioner, you're going to get stomped by someone who is more well rounded than you, no matter how good you are at your particular niche.
Its not set in stone. Beyond BJJ being made totally irrelevant (bjj not submission grappling, bjj is about guard play, something that will get you killed in an amateur fight), the "meta" keeps changing regularly. In the early days you had a mixed bag with wrestle-boxers dominating, then we shifted towards more kickboxing, it keeps swinging back and forth. The outputs per fighter is way higher now, prodigies who are good are defensively better. Every weight division has bigger fighters which means that you have more knockouts but also a higher willingness to step in the pocket and punch in combination. The bjj aproach of take pass guard has been replaced with dragging the guy to the corner of the cage, once your hips are not stationary, you cannot play guard. The sport is still fun, its that the UFC much like the WWE wants to kill the outliers who will demand what they are worth like they do in boxing.
Maybe that's how it should be, but its just a fact now that "MMA" is not literally "mixed martial arts" but really it is a style unto itself, it isn't really about pitting different styles against each other anymore.
Yeah but you do see a ton of flair. Caucasian wrestlers, kickboxers, american wrestlers, freestyle wrestlers, submission grapplers all are very different. The first true MMA only background guy was Rory Mcdonald funnily enough.
I wonder if they should start introducing different obstacles to the octagon, or adding in strange conditions. "In round 1 they're covered in cooking grease. In round 2 they'll have an eyepatch over one eye. In round 3, their legs will be tied together with a two foot rope to limit movement and kicks. Round 4, they fight while each gripping a Bandana as hard as they can.
Or they can introduce powerslap inside the octagon and lose them even more money lol. But jokes aside, they should add two more weightclasses between 155 and 185, pay scouts money like actual sports and remove weight cuts. Beyond that, allow kicks to the face on the ground, stand people up if they clinch too long on the fence and sign fighters late. Signing fighters via the contender series leads to people like Bo Nickal who cannot get good and end up as midlding fighters with no style. Luke rockhold had a style, you could see that he built it to kill wrestlers, could not have looked like had he been admitted earlier.
Or just go full Super Smash Bros. and let them opt to have Tasers, baseball bats, and small incendiary devices dropped into the octagon if a fight goes past 3 rounds. Or is that WWE's shtick?
Lol, pro wrestling is worse now because people know of mma so the scare factor goes out, beyond that the peak of it in the last 40 years, the attitude era was defined by adult themed storylines and outliers like Steve Austin, The Rock, which the WWE does not want more of. So they up the ante in the usage of fake weapons and falls but its not compelling because the two things i listed are simply not there anymore. You tell someone that you like pro wrestling now, you will be seen as a wierdo as the product is for kids. I do not watch it but Jim Cornettes podcast gives a fun rundown of why its bad now.
I kid, but if you want to break out of the current local maxima for the current dominant fighting styles, you will have to adjust the parameters somewhere to force new optimizations.
The current style is good. Every belt holder currently is someone who strikes and gets finishes. Less than a tenth of the roster is made up of wrestlers and wrestling defence gets better each year as anti wrestling is easier than trying to take people down. The UFC just needs to hire scouts, let fighters unionise, make more money. Boxing is very fun now. We have had superfights on the regular whilst Dana does not want Jon Jones to leave despite having a worse string of opponents in the past two years than Sam Alvey. His contender series is a terrible idea too.

I spend more time than average in fast food subreddits. I have just been tickled pink by one recently submitted to /r/jerseymikes. For those who don't want to click through, it's a meme image of the ham they slice for their sandwiches with the following text:
"Is that ham processed? If it's processed, I don't want it".
Ma'am, that is an eleven-pound whole slab of deli ham. It has no bones, fat, or connective tissue. It is an amalgamation of the meat from several pigs, emulsified, liquified, strained, and ultimately inexorably joined into an unholy meat obelisk. Goad had no hand in the creation of this abhorrence. The fact that this ham monolith exists proves that God is either impotent to alter His universe or ignorant of the horrors taking place in His kingdom. This prism of pork is more than deli meat. It is a physical declaration of mankind's contempt for the natural order. It is hubris manifest.
We also have a lower sodium variety if you would prefer that.
In any case, I don't care about it being a loogie in the face of the Creator or an affront to my GP when looking at my blood pressure. I'm very opinionated about what makes a good sandwich, and I think Jersey Mike's absolutely crushes the nationwide competition. I still recall vividly my first taste of a true Italian (complete with prosciutto!) from Lenny's in the Memphis airport 20 years ago that changed my life. That place is now a shadow of its former self, but it's interesting how times have changed. These places couldn't even survive in ideal locations in the southeast back when I was a Subway sandwich artist and now they're thriving. Awesome, because my palate was built for thin ham.

That'd be interesting. Recently watched a video that shows that Jiu Jitsu loses utility when you're not on soft/forgiving ground.
If it was 2 v. 2 I'd prefer some kind of tag-team format, since actual two v. twos inevitably turn into 1 v. 2s, which always end badly for the one.
They seem to be in a decent spot right now balancing overall safety for competitors while still allowing some bloodsport, and obviously it is in nobody's interest for competitors to get devastatingly hurt on the regular. It runs counter to their strategy of getting mainstream appeal, but I'd say they could afford to do fewer large events per year and focus more on really stacking the big ones up.

Yeah the Papacy allowing the annulment of the already married King of France Louis XII to marry the widow Duchess of Brittany of the previous king (the kings were cousins) just a few years before looks nakedly political. If Catherine been any other woman and not been related so closely to the Holy Roman Emperor I suspect the annulment would have granted, and her forced into a convent. The king's great matter had the unfortunate affect of no betrothals turning into marriage for Mary I, if she had married earlier we could have seen Hapsburg England! So only one of Henry VIII's children inclined to procreate never got the opportunity.

Because it is not, in fact, true. In New Jersey (and perhaps other states) if you check yourself into a mental hospital you are disqualified from buying a gun. If you're involuntarily committed you can remove the disqualification by getting your record expunged, but I do not believe there is an expungement process for voluntary committement.

It’s interesting to note when reading through the New Testament how much of the Pauline epistles is about being good husbands/wives- and we know from Roman moralists that Roman men(the feelings of women were not recorded) often felt this way, that marriage just kinda sucked. The church fathers also go on about the same topic- being a good husband or wife.

In my experience paper towels work best for windows. If you want to be fancy or have window tint that doesn't mix with ammonia get the glass cleaner that comes in a can. It smells nice!

I used too many words to just say "YouTube certified mechanic" instead of "ASE certified mechanic" (aka a real mechanic). I'm not a real mechanic, but I was a delivery driver for a long time and between keeping my own car on the road and working on cars for coworkers or friends (At the delivery company I used to work at I was the unofficial company mechanic.) I've learned a few things along the way. You can find a video showing how to do most jobs (and lots on auto detailing) on common cars on YouTube, and it's a quick way to preview a job and decide whether I want to do it or farm it out to a shop.
For example, changing a CV axle on an 8th generation Honda Civic (2006-2011) is fairly easy so long as you have an impact wrench (A battery powered impact wrench is the best tool I've ever bought.), a pry bar, and a big enough hammer. Changing the starter on those same cars if it's the Si model with the bigger engine is NOT a fun job (ditto for an AC compressor; an alternator swap isn't hard though), so I would pay a shop to do that unless I absolutely had to save the money on labor.
All large political movements have some amount of cultists, but it's a matter of degrees. Biden had almost no cultists. Obama had some cultists especially amongst blacks. But for Trump the cultists are very mainstream. That's how you end up with situations like this, or this, or blatant hypocrites like Catturd becoming leading figures of the movement.
