This is flippant, but over time I've assumed that our racial victim hierarchy has really just degraded into darker > lighter and if there's a gradient, everyone is rounded to the nearest dark skin tone. Basically, "One Drop".

I do defend it. If NHJ had never put her money where her mouth is, where would we be now? She'd still be an influential columnist, calling the system racist, helping funnel ever more taxpayer money down the gullet of failing students, teachers, administrators, and systems. Now at least we have an admission of being wrong, even with dozens of caveats and carveouts. The left never does this. All it took was an act of child sacrifice, and I'd rather it be from them than me.
The story is all about "apartheid". No mention of the fact that her daughter's failing schools were receiving upwards of $40,000 a year per student and has a good teacher-to-student ratio. The story never has a mea culpa for all the parents she would have looked down on. The story has nothing to say about the persistent disciplinary issues that wrecked the chance to teach. It's all the fault of apartheid
To your point, though, there was much more to learn here that wasn't. But let's boil this down further than "apartheid".
The inevitable, forever sin of black pundits is tribal racialism at any cost. As she describes her daughter's redemption in the new school, doubtless helped by a wide variety of people, note that only black teachers are offered applause for doing their jobs. The worthlessly incompetent, often just straight up not coming to work at her previous school, are of some mystery race.
If you ever happen to enter purely black spaces on social media, where they feel relatively safe from view, It's obvious that they know what the problems are and who is causing them, whether it's crappy service at restaurants, insane violence, or idiotic music. But even there, the leftists viciously attack the supposed Uncle Toms. Even after suffocating external criticism so completely, it's impossible for them to tolerate Noticing even from their own people.
NHJ still fundamentally hates white people and "white" institutions. One of the best parts of sending her to PS 307 was how dark the crayon was she used for her self-portrait, a level of skin color fetishization completely alien to any white kid in America:

And yet, it's a huge victory, and the response (IMO) has to be moderate to encourage more of people admitting that they were even kinda wrong. I couldn't forsee a person this morally repugnant writing anything like this a decade ago. It's amazing what children can do for parents.

I'm comfortable with a sophisticated-enough model trained on my knowledge and tone to be accessible to my work teams as a utilitarian force multiplier. That day seems a long way off, because even with reams of data to consume that hasn't gotten any better in years.
On a forum built around human discussion, or the human-focused discussions that are important for fostering culture, I reject that AI usage is correct or necessary.

Sex offender case is interesting. I am not sure how burdensome registering is, but my first instinct was that it's pretty unfair to have to register where you are when that changes daily. If anyone should be managing the sex offender registration for an employee that works in various places, it should be the cleaning service or the criminal-employee NGO that's facilitating the work. And either of those entities shouldn't be sending sex offenders to clean up children's camps.

Does it also seem to you a wise idea to confidently insistent you need more of a weapon system without looking at a map of where it might be employed?
Not who you're responding to, but this isn't the argument. The "most powerful military in the world" should be able to produce common weaponry at meaningful scale, and I'll repeat that there being an ocean between us and China is not the nail in the coffin you believe it to be. Most of our wars have crossed water.

I really do see the point, and of course logistically a tomahawk missile is nicer to have than an artillery shell for a given weight and volume.
I just think the chance of the war degrading into a sloshy grind where we're attempting to subjugate China and the difference in cost and un-jam-ability of traditional shells becomes more valuable than most people expect. Even America would have to start making choices based on effectiveness per dollar in that scenario.
A great historical analogue here is that the Gatling Gun, much like the drone, was going to end protracted conflict and supplant the infantryman's rifle. That didn't happen.

Ultimately we're at the point of a differing opinion. I apologize for using "laughable" in my original response to you, and see valid points here.
I think that, classically, even professional strategists tend to repeatedly underestimate certain components of warfare. Snipers are a good example, and artillery is another.

I'm not a military historian, but looking at the blue parts of the globe and saying "Oop! Well, artillery won't be involved!" doesn't make sense.
If we're talking a month-long, high-tech fight that ends decisively? Sure. How many wars, not games, work that way? We're discussing in this thread only one of the more recent quagmires we've gotten into, and one that stretched for 2 decades.

Ranger has already corrected your overall rosy outlook on our munitions production - we're very behind right now and totally unprepared for a major conflict. But clause here is pretty damning. Even in a drone-driven future, it's laughable to think that standard artillery won't be relevant.

To your point I think actively giving understanding others a shot is critical, and trying once, twice, or even a couple dozen times won't kill you.
It does make me much more confident about coming to the "Well it's just evil" conclusion. There are certain (very few!) beliefs and behaviors which are great signal shortcuts to knowing a person is worthless.

I do agree that at least temporarily electricity will get more expensive. We're hemmed in by declining demand from regulation, offshoring manufacturing, and general efficiency improvements plus the pernicious insanity of cost disease for anything infrastructure related.
Unlike healthcare though there's a pendulum to swing back there if AI forces investments.

JFC both of those outcomes are ludicrous fantasies.
For the former, we finally have justification to invest in power generation more appropriate to our civilizational needs. There's going to be a serious lag, but 10 years from now the new plants are going to be feeding cheaper AI and we'll all reap the benefits.
For the latter, it takes municipal fuckups of incredible magnitude to put water at risk anywhere we're putting data centers. Surely you're not falling for publicity stunts with muddy mason jars? I have higher expectations of even a first time caller!

I get it and I do understand that my professional life's stakes are far lower than an inaugural interplanetary astronaut.

I can tell your blood is up, but this claim isn't ridiculous. The majority of Americans support euthanasia.
I appreciate your bravery in potentially experiencing a drawn out, painful death that is "natural". But a few points:
- This is an easier claim to make the younger you are
- More people than you are affected (as you pointed out with your anecdote). I understand that you believe God is more important than your family, but not everyone subscribes to that.
- Prolonging your life with expensive technology that other people pay for isn't natural either. We can't say pumping blood into a corpse is gross on one hand and then declare that being on a ventilator for 5 years is definitely the right way to die.

Quite an intense assertion. Most people fold under torture, the suicide rate for people with (ex) chronic, splitting migraines is high enough that you can get FDA waivers for drug development. I've felt pain before that is, to me, obviously worth killing myself over if I have to feel it for the foreseeable future.

The short answer is nothing on Merrill I know about. Robinhood doing 3.5% APY on checking and savings is what I'm doing for now.
This steak is too juicy. The lobster: too buttery.
How are they going to get out of this? I suppose they could step up from this sub-sub-sub culture to just a straight up gay bar and use the notoriety to get back in the black, but since they signed on for this originally it may not occur to them.
When I read this or equivalent stories I need to check my ideological ego. So few of these freakazoid businesses really exist, and a ton of little mainstream or christian shops shut down because of community mismanagement or family fights all the time. I don't think there's enough data to suggest that any of these fail at different rates, or I haven't seen it. But watching supposed supporters thrash like sharks in chummed water to hate the owners of their spaces is hilarious.
