Which Harry Potter house would you be sorted into? I’m either a Slytherin who thinks he’s a Hufflepuff or a Hufflepuff who thinks he’s a Slytherin. I’d rather go to Durmstrang or Beauxbatons though.

Pretty sure I'd be a muggle.

At 11 years, being ahead of my peers in academic terms was definitely most of my personality, so I'd probably be a shoe-in for Ravenclaw. I suppose I'm fine with that. It would likely stop me from getting complacent on that front.

I want to be in Ravenclaw so I can hang out with Cho Chang.

Uh, why is belonging to the evil house an obvious thing?

Because I am fascinated with the nature and exercise of power, reject much of contemporary consensus morality, am a conflict theorist, and neither practice nor encourage courageous behavior.

I'm far from the only person to be annoyed that Slytherin is supposedly just for "ambition", and yet it winds up being the hyper-evil house. I get it, it's a simplistic young adult boarding school adventure book, but the later books seem to try to get deeper/more mature.

I mean, it's a British book series, it's no wonder Rowlings saw "ambitious" as a synonym for "evil".

Anyway, more seriously, the main issue is that the book series failed to establish a single Slytherin as unambiguously good. Snape doesn't really count because despite being on the good side he spends all of the books being unreasonably nasty to Harry because of a grudge he had with his father, which is a very shitty thing to do to an orphan.

HPMOR does a much better job with this, because Slytherin's current behavior as the "evil" house — — comes from evaporative cooling. Slytherin gets a reputation for having all the death eaters and attracting all the dumb blood purists, so everyone who doesn't want to be associated with that convinces the Sorting Hat to send them elsewhere, which means Slytherin gets worse, and by the time Harry shows up, the cycle's been running for a fairly long time and the whole house deserves a rebuild.

I assume he meant that he holds a lot of opinions that Rowling would not share, and so would be considered evil in her book.

Ravenclaw, obviously (unless muggle realism damns me to Slytherin). I suspect most of us would go there, this being a rationalist site and all.

Ravenclaw, probably. Although, does it sort Arminianists?

If I were antiarminianist, such as I'd imagine a predestinarian sorting hat would be, I'd be eager to sort Arminianists even more than anyone else, purely out of contrarianism

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
