The usual crap conservatives started believing around 2021.
I've actually heard it described two very similar but subtly different ways - the "borderline between psychosis and neurosis" (as in pathology in those gaps) and as "borderline level of functioning" in contrast to psychotic or neurotic level of functioning (hardcore psychodynamics). I don't know which is more true, but the clinical pearl is the same for both - experiences (including negative self-talk) can become so overwhelming they approach the character of delusion and hallucination, but of course the actual effect on the substrate and underlining biology is radically different.
Still, it is a great teaching point lol.
It's useful you point out the "didn't have much personality of their own" because that is a significant feature in the severe cases - you can see them simply not have have preferences or wants in the way a normal and healthy person does.
A tip I've seen good physician diagnosticians lean into is simply "how long do your mood swings last" if they aren't in the 5-7 day range it's unlikely to be Bipolar (I, anyway). Another good rule of thumb is that if you don't have an inpatient stay (and likely an involuntary one at that) then you probably haven't had a manic episode.
But yes diagnosis for purpose of insurance coverage and other things like that does happen.
I'm not an expert on this but I think it's often driven by attachment dynamics - mother/daughter and mother/son relationship are fundamental different as are male patterns of reality and independence exploration.
I do know some thing you can rule of thumb it as APD=male BPD= female with that being the majority of the cases, but I've noticed plenty of men who are really just BPD instead of APD.
Less so the other way around.
Technically I didn't say never, I said 'ever'. And I genuinely don't believe Trump has the power to punish Musk any more than he already has been.
Yes? I feel like you're reading my comment out of context.
We were discussing
- A specific individual nowadays for whom the odds were 1%, not 10%, but who was discussing hypothetical 10%
- The past during specific time periods when maternal mortality spiked (because they got medical care and their medical care didn't wash their hands)
Edit: no actually I see your point. Yes, it makes no sense to invoke evolution for it for temporary periods (and in fairness when it spiked people surely didn't realize what was happening)
Hanania's appealing to Musk to join team EHC:

If forced to choose, Musk is probably the less bad option, but it's really not a good sign that he's decided the to make the first salvo "Epstein client list." All that does is alienate smart people, he's not going to win the support of pedophilia-obsessed losers.
I used to care about fiscal responsibility, but both sides (Republicans and Democrats) keep hitting the defect button. American fiscal policy in the 21st century is a spoils system. There is less in common and more in conflict between Red and Blue America. When one side pillages the Treasury, it’s a betrayal to your side if you don’t also pillage the Treasury once you get into power.
This will change, probably once Social Security runs insolvent within the next ten years. Then America, like a deadbeat Eurozone country, will be forced by necessity to implement austerity measures. And few of the current crop of geriatric politicians in Congress will be around to deal with the fallout.
Far-group just means no one thinks you are able to present a threat. A mongolian goatherder is, presumably, both of our far-group. Xi Jinping is, presumably, both of our outgroup. You are far-group to everyone because libertarians lose almost all the time(sometimes they have chainsaws and cloned dogs). If Elon was actually Trump's puppetmaster you'd be lots of people's outgroups.
It's not differentness, it's unworthiness of notice.
Off-topic, mostly just posting because some people who will be drawn to this thread might enjoy this and not have seen it:
Shane Gillis and Steve Gerben on Late Night with Seth Myers
Cumtown-adjacent Shane Gillis sweetly dragged his favorite jewish punching bag along with him into a mainstream national spotlight, and it went well.
There is a stark contrast between MSSP's fate vs Cumtown/TAFS (I am very comfortable calling with high certainty right now that Adam Friedland will not become "The Joe Rogan of the Left", for reasons already well explained by others in this thread), that... is not actually that surprising after reflecting on the personalities involved, but is still pretty crazy to see for people who've watched both from the early days.
I'm still kinda baffled that the janitor from News Radio became an actual person of national influence.
hope nobody tells him how heroin addiction correlates with dying with Alzheimer's
So it potentially helps Elon to some extent, to make a more dramatic break from Trump with big WWF promos cut from both of them. It depends on how the media plays it, but this could be the same kind of whiplash that erases a fair amount of elon derangement among democrats and lets him slip out of washington with a bit more independent posture intact.
Hmm, this brings to mind the old chestnut about how Howard Hughes used to denounce all of his former executives when they left his employ. If I remember the story correctly, this was a deliberate ploy on Hughes' part. Said employee would then sue Hughes for defamation and Hughes would settle, thereby giving his former employee a large sum of cash that was, thanks to the court involvement, free of taxation.
It wouldn't be a singular benefit, but benefits. As long as both parties have their own interests being advanced, they don't need a singular.
As for specific potential benefits: the clearest benefit is for Elon getting to politically distance himself from Trump and Doge as he returns back to being 'just' a business man and the various other actors who might want to capitalize on a Trump-Musk 'split.' Benefits to Trump are more nuanced, but could serve an internal political party management- the nominal straw that is breaking Trump-Musk is the budget, annd this could be used as a circle-the-wages call (demand) to get the Republicans on board to pass the bill despite the fiscal conservative objections.
If this was a coordinated break, however, I imagine it would be to bait the Democrats in Congress towards the Epstein file that Musk called attention to. This feud is the insinuation that it incriminates Trump, which is catnip to the Dems, but if this were coordinated, then both parties could know that Trump himself is not condemned, but also that other (mutual) political opponents might be. If the Epstein file was released by Trump directly, it could be dismissed as a political attack fabrication. If the Democrats 'force' it open during Congressional hearing discovery, they'd be owning the responsibility / consequence for any fallout. When you consider how MeToo ended up scalping more notable Democrats than Republicans....
(And- at the same time- the previous individual benefits listed above.)
To be clear- this isn't saying/claiming this is the reason. Merely that this is an example of a political ploy a fake falling out could serve.
Again, I agree on all counts! I actually didn't know that borderline referred to borderline psychosis either, in fact. Initially, I took it to mean that BPD meant that the individual didn't have much of a personality of their own and adapted the personality of their friends a la Single White Female because that was my sister's behavior. And not only do I agree that there's waaaaaaaaaaay too much equivalence between mood swings and bipolar in general, I'd also add that I've heard people at work say that they deliberately diagnosed a BPD client with bipolar to get them access to services that they would otherwise be ineligible to receive because personality disorder.
On the final front, I can't help but wonder if the environmental chaos that surrounds the BPD individual plus the individual genetics just make it that much easier for BPD to emerge from the witches' brew of the home. I know, for instance, that my mother would often go back to her ur-trauma of losing her father at a tender young age, compounded by her mother quickly marrying another man to re-make the family, and I do ultimately believe that there's a lot of truth there in her specific case. Likewise, when my sister and I were young (she would have been 4), mom was in a serious car accident and almost died, so that or perhaps going through with a planned move to another state on the heels of that could have done it for her. Regardless, I can only speculate.
Yeah, I completely agree, although I think that the "borderline" aspect of BPD conveys important information, namely that the sufferer's emotional distortions can be indistinguishable from psychosis.
You aren't wrong but I don't think anybody really knows this these days except for die hard psychodynamicisists and I can't even spell that.
Wish people knew that though, same for "mood swings are not manic episodes." Every fucking doctor needs to know that one.
In any case my understanding of the state of the research is that it is a two hit situation - you mostly need the genetic predisposition AND the environmental stimulus. However as I suspect you know from past convos - cluster-b coping mechanisms from cultural heritage or family dynamics aren't necessarily the true disorder.
Republicans have a strong incentive to drop a big bailout to keep the urban machines from going whole-hog with the democrats again
GOP has no incentive to bail these guys out, and every incentive to let them go bankrupt. The gop will never pull these cities and they know it. Slight chance they could have pre trump, 0% post trump. If (when) they go bankrupt, they have a huge chip to bargain with and will force concessions.
Remember that weird moment when Colbert announced that Comey had been fired by Trump? The audience cheered, before being corrected by Colbert that Comey was now a good guy and was to be lionized if you're anti-Trump (the updated narrative which went on for the next month or so in the media).
Maternal mortality with no medical care isn't anywhere near 10% per birth- it's 1-2% per birth in the least developed parts of subsaharan Africa and that seems to line up with historic data from Europe(granted, needs to be taken with a grain of salt).
But Trump's election was specifically a repudiation of the Republican establishment's weakness on illegal immigration, wasn't it? Even his eagerness to be obnoxious to opponents was seen as insurance against the possibility of him becoming yet another Republican who would go weak-kneed and try to thread the needle between "grr, we hate illegal immigration" among their voters and "oh, but what can we do about it in a divided government? better trade another sweeping amnesty for some minor hypothetical enforcement concessions" in DC. The Democrats' only difference from the repudiated Republicans was that they were supporting the same outcome overtly rather than dishonestly, and Trump's base was centered around opposition to that specific outcome, not principled opposition to dishonesty, so there wasn't a lot of room for collaboration there.
The Democratic strategy of "help get people pissed off at an opponent who's pretty good at pissing people off" would have been a great one (for their own strategic interests; perhaps not for the country as a whole), if only they'd been able to field candidates and policies that weren't also pissing everyone off in different ways.
Please don't kill manned spaceflight. Please don't kill manned spaceflight.
You have family Civ V games?!?!? Now that is goals... Well done
Man, I remember that news story. Mostly, I remember the jokes about how it was pointless to petition Taylor Swift to break up with her boyfriend when she was obviously going to anyways because Taylor Swift.
The democrats need someone who's good at his(and it has to be a man) job and not someone who can hit the right shibboleths and characteristics. Currently they have Olivia Juliana in charge of their effort, who's best known for her weight and also somewhat well known for failing at being a progressive influencer even by the low standards of the Texas Democratic trainwreck-of-a party.
'Failing upwards landwhale feminists want to appeal to you' is not how you get a workable plan for winning over young men. It's how you get troll answers and a money pit. Democrats need someone who's legitimately popular on his own, who gets to color outside the lines a bit, who's a man's man that appeals to men. Legitimately, the failing upwards reputation is one they need to shed just like the Karen reputation. I don't know if this guy is the guy for that. But I will say- Joe Rogan didn't become a big deal because of his association with Trump. He became a big deal and Trump won him over.
This Kurzgesagt video evokes a similar feeling to me: losing something that can never be regained, the crushing weight of the rules of material reality.
His big projects are World Peace and Kickstarter TV. World Peace 2 is coming out soon too. Some other clips I have saved:
