Headland helmed The Acolyte, which I have never seen and can't judge, but as you say that show was cancelled after its first season. She is hardly representative of the entire franchise.
I'm not sure what your definition of "a bad person" is when you relegate Kennedy to that position. She worked with Steven Spielberg on many of the classic films of my youth, including Close Encounters, E.T., and the original Raiders of the Lost Ark. (Just as an aside, your evisceration of the most recent film is I believe overly negative. I saw it and enjoyed it. It was clearly Ford's film from start to finish, he was never "outdone" by Waller-Bridge [whose relative beauty I might also disagree with you on], they brought back the very welcome Karen Allen--and John Rhys-Davies--from the first film, and generally Dial of Destiny was one of the best in the series apart from the first. As well, the vast majority of any action done by "80-year old" Ford was when he was young. The de-aging was the best on this film of any I've ever seen. Having said this, you are of course free to dislike the film as much as you like.)
Back to Kennedy: I completely agree with you that she has made some fairly disastrous decisions when it comes to the new-and-enlightened Star Wars films. The disappointment comes on two levels: 1) Woke nonsense that you so accurately pinpoint in your parent post and 2) so many had such high hopes after a general disappointment in Lucas's decisions about storyline in the prequels--this disappointment is less noticeable now, a barely passing odor in the air, as so many rageposting now cut their teeth on the prequels and see those films (and not the OT) as the best Star Wars. For a while, and maybe even now on reddit, you could/can generate many upvotes for yourself by asking "Wasn't Han actually an abuser showcasing toxic masculinity?" The younger fanbase is not what the older fanbase used to be.
I am not familiar with The Despot of Antrim that you mention in your last paragraph, but that's just because i'm pretty out-of-touch.
Oh, we're doing the meme where women are begging for attention as men replace them with AI waifus?
It's not going to happen because men are also biological units with evolutionary hardwiring. A woman willing to put out is never going to be alone. She might not get the guy she wants, but she can get a guy. And a man who has the tiniest shot at a real girl who doesn't repulse him will prefer her to a digital waifu.
Trans women are a tiny presence for all the noise they make, and if surveys say 3% of heterosexual men would consider dating a trans woman, I'd bet the number who really would date a trans woman is <1%.
Why would his being Jewish prevent you from being a fan?
I understand defending these things is an existential concern for you Wave_Existence, but come on, this is the nanny state? The fourth amendment does still exist right?
I would expect some government intervention, they'd want you to ensure it only works on glassholes and doesn't affect security cameras somehow. Because otherwise it's just a free crime app.
Learned of him from HPMOR. Feels similar to Timur Shaov (but not as mean). National Brotherhood Week and The Masochism Tango stand out.
is it just the discrete/covert nature of the device that bothers you? because 90ish percent of people on the street already have a HD camcorder in their pocket at all times.
People are becoming more and more aware that using these cameras to record any manner of material can result in either financial gain and or positive notoriety. There is clearly a market for these always on recording devices and i just wonder why the nanny state needs to get involved on this one.
Jewish, but I don't know exactly what he means by "subversive". Protestants were saying much worse things about Catholics in the 60s, and in any case, all the Catholics I know have laughed along with the song.
But yes, Smut is so good.
One of my friends has a 9-year-old niece, and she's a fairly precocious reader (to his delight). She apparently, and I'm quoting here, "rips through books and has outgrown Highlights." He's asked for recommendations for a monthly magazine or book-club that is age appropriate and steers clear of culture war fodder/is non-woke. Any suggestions from the Motte?
Not parents, but a friend introduced me to his genius. The Vatican Rag would have been scandalous when it came out but it was also packed with great lyrics and incredible rhymes. But I will always have twin soft spots for Poisoning Pigeons in the Park and Lobachevsky.
“it is impossible to visualize the conduct of hostilities in which one side would be bound by rules of warfare without benefitting from them, and the other side would benefit from rules of warfare without being bound by them"
However, Israel factually is bound by rules of warfare without benefitting from them; while Hamas factually does benefit from rules of warfare without being bound by them ('there is a class of citizen that laws bind but do not protect, and then there is one that is protected by laws that do not bind').
Note that in the West, citizens in the latter class know it, and thus are far more likely to support Palestine- because not doing so is a refutation of their rights to that special protection in their own societies. Queers for Palestine is perfectly coherent through this lens.
The actual solution is to simply withdraw the protection that society has- if they don't want to follow the laws of war, they must lose the protection of those laws. Laws against genocide are there to protect a society that goes to war and loses from being slaughtered to the last; if a society wants to go to war and not fight that way, the law against genocide must then no longer apply. There is no right to the self-determination of a people without first respecting their right to self-destruction.
Seems odd, what’s getting “traded off” for higher IQ? My understanding was mutational load is why higher IQ = better looking, as more mutations generally makes you uglier and dumber
He was Jewish, I'm positive.
What heritage?
I liked National Brotherhood Week.
A police department's job is to protect the civilians of their state. An army's job is not to protect the civilians of other states.
I happened on this performance good decade ago now, and been a fan since. Hard to choose a favorite, maybe Lobachevsky and Smut (love the "For filth (I'm glad to say) is in the mind of the beholder" line). Not surprised at your dad at all, I normally would not be a fan, his heritage and subversive themes, but the songs are too consistently catchy and funny not to override my bias completely.
I think the closest you see to this is a change in clothing trends from when the elf is young to present day. But I don't know how much you'd be able to tell apart clothing from 500AD and 1500AD (I certainly couldn't, aside from 'vaguely stereotypical ancient Greek' to 'vaguely stereotypical fantasy European').
But there is at least a little emphasis on "humans actually do change and grow relatively quickly". At one point the elf notes that it's impractical to get the magical equivalent to a license when the governments and organizations change so often.
- Under 10 miles.
- No idea. Women's fashion shops with custom alterations under 15 miles.
- Nearest I don't know. The one we get our dairy from around 30 miles and same distance for a different one we get fruit from. Vegetables... Probably further away but they have a drop off under 5 miles away.
- Around 5 miles.
- 1 mile, but I preferentially go to the one around 8 miles away.
- Around 5 miles.
Without looking each one up:
- 30 miles?
- I'm not sure. The only person I know who asked about this ordered one from Vietnam.
- 20 miles? Green Chile, probably.
- 30 miles?
- 15 miles?
- 30 miles?
I feel like most of these are just different ways of asking "how far are you from the core of the nearest city?"
If you damaged their property or health, and I was on the jury, I would be much inclined to acquit.
Stills at a rate of one per five minutes is much less of a privacy nightmare. I mean, you probably should not wear them for most jobs, but recording full video with sound is much more likely to catch material which will go viral.
Swearing yes, losing temper and screaming at a junior aide for an hour yes. Snappy profanity laced back and forth repartee, not so much. In my experience at least.
I think that there is a difference. Glassholes pose a different threat to privacy than governments or big corporations.
If I am in a McDonalds, I am probably recorded by security cameras. But it is also highly probable that McDonalds will not decide upload that footage in some viral video about funny incidents at their restaurants.
Likewise, the NSA can read my text messages. But again, I don't have to worry about featuring in "best of captured texts today", at the most some perv NSA employees will have a laugh with some other pervert spooks about it.
Sure, both government and commercial entities can get hacked, so I would prefer for McDonalds to delete their videos after a week or so (and they share that incentive).
By contrast, if I am recorded by some random pervert with a cell phone, the probability that I will land on the internet is much higher. This is why people react much stronger about cell phones pointed at them than about security cameras.
If someone openly records, my instinct is to tolerate it if they are clearly recording something other than me, and just move out of the picture. By contrast, if some asshole covertly records people without any extenuating context, I very much hope they will make "glassholes got their cameras and jaws broken collection, part 563".
What’s the wealthiest country with a non-marginal presence of each category of megafauna?
Temperate bears are easy- it’s the United States, if you say that doesn’t count for some reason(tinkering with the definition of marginal, I guess), then Canada. The next one seems like it’s probably Japan. Polar bears would be Norway, but let’s say those are a marine mammal.
For elephants, I’m guessing either South Africa or Malaysia, depending on exactly the range of Indian elephants. For giraffes and rhinos, I’m a bit more confident in South Africa.
For big cats I think this is Uruguay, with jaguars. Maybe there’s more leopards in Saudi Arabia than I think, though. Of course if you count pumas as big cats(they are after all both those things, but taxonomically different) then the US wins again.
For big grazers, this is the U.S., with bison. If you specifically restrict it to large antelope it might be Kazakhstan.
For apes, I’m pretty sure it’s Malaysia, with orangutans. Large monkeys would be Saudi Arabia, with baboons.
Big canines would be, probably, Norway.
Eagles are probably Switzerland.
Big snakes are, I’m guessing, either Malaysia or Singapore.
Any categories I’m missing? Any corrections?
