Entirely possible that spec ops ordered to assassinate Trump would botch the job on purpose.
That being said, it's not plausible. I think US military personnel ordered to carry out an extrajudicial execution would refuse, and that anybody who thinks they could authorize that knows this and is more scared of the possibility than they are of Trump.
My money is on Antifa or a random schizo(and a right winger shooting at Trump would have to be pretty schizo indeed- although it's a legit possibility that can't be ruled out).
Total speculation but I think the shot was from an oblique angle off from the left (Trump’s forward right) and so probably hit the stands behind and off to the side. Probably a shot from medium far to have missed several follow ups (also the farther away the easier to avoid Secret Service instant response, or maybe from beyond a perimeter)
a right winger shooting at Trump would have to be pretty schizo indeed
I have a hunch that most media will take any scrap of info they can to try to paint the shooter as a right-winger, regardless of the truth or reasonableness of that assertion.
So far it appears he was only grazed, and nobody else around was hit, which is a really bizarre outcome. A clean miss or a solid hit is far more likely. I'm not quite sure what to make of it. I guess more information will come out in the next few hours, but it feels pretty scissor-y already.
There's also entirely new categories of commonly consumed foods. How many people in 1995 started their day with a coffee-like milkshake? Even those that don't, energy drinks have more calories than a cup of coffee, even with milk and sugar(and portion sizes were smaller back then, too).
Are you suggesting that whoever shot him intended for him to live? I'm assuming the deep state wants him dead, but of course nobody knows anything.
So like, if you believe Trump really is this massive threat to democracy, why wouldn't a patriotic American try to shoot him? A few possible reasons:
- Someone else just as bad or worse would step up.
Unlikely tbh. Nobody else commands the same personal loyalty from the Republican base. The party would likely devolve into squabbling like the Alexandrian empire.
- Assassinations are always bad for deontological reasons.
Also highly questionable. Would it have been a bad idea to shoot Hitler in 1933? Stalin in 1924?
This seems to be a highly counterintuitive conclusion, but is it? If someone is a threat, you eliminate them. Is the solution more explicit probabilistic thinking? If Trump has a 90% chance of ending American democracy, then maybe the right move is to shoot him. If he only has a 10% chance, maybe deontological considerations dominate?
Not dead, looked like if it hit him it grazed his ear.
That sounds like it should be able to be sorted out, legally. It should be possible to get a green card issued. So maybe talk to a lawyer?
It looks like the process is a decent bit easier if she was here legally in the first place, which it sounds like is the case. Otherwise she'd need to leave the country, which adds complications, as having been in the US illegally could make prevent her from being allowed to return for ten years, so fortunately, you probably don't need to worry about that. She'll need to apply and an immediate relative who is a citizen (your father, if they're married, or you, if you're at least 21, could both work) will file a petition on her behalf. One form for each of the citizen (I-130) and the noncitizen (I-485), it looks like.
It looks like she then wouldn't need to worry about deportation in the meantime before the green card comes in.
I'm not sure how long that will take.
Is there any country where you could spend less than 20% of median income on tasty snacks providing more calories than you need, without obesity epidemic?
France and the high income East Asian countries have low obesity rates despite people being easily able to gorge themselves on food that is generally regarded as quite good by outside observers.
Not dead. They clipped his ear though. 3 inches inches to the right and his head would have popped on live tv. Unreal. He seriously is a man of destiny.
Taxing immigration in general (or an auction) would be a nice policy—it would incentivize preventing illegal immigration, make it easier to pitch for more legal immigration, and would raise revenue.
Edit: I don't know that a new account is actually a good signal of bait in this case, although it would be evidence in that direction.
Yeah, it does appear we are in definitions territory. I understand your point, but I think mine is obviously true.
You don't automatically become a citizen. There's a process that has to be gone through.
Isn't it likely this was from an air rifle? I assumed from the pictures and sound it actually hit him multiple times and scraped his face but didn't do worse damage.
Not if they'd succeeded. But it was probably a random crazy, and my second choice would be a random crazy egged on by the FBI -- not in order to kill Trump, but because the FBI likes to do stuff like that (e.g. Gretchen Whitmer kidnapping plot, "draw Mohammed" shooter).
As an anchor baby you can sponsor a family visa for your parents.
If he's 21, which, given that the entrance was in the 90s, and the marriage after, is probably but not at all necessarily the case.
A lot of things violate equality or hurt the kids other than just saying the kids can't be citizens. What if one kid has a car given to him by his parents, but another kids had parents who stole a car and gave it to him? Should we refuse to confiscate the car and return it to its owner on the grounds that the kid didn't commit the theft and taking it away makes the kids in the two families unequal? What if one set of parents is just ordinary criminals, should we refuse to send them to jail for bank robbery because doing so impacts the lfe of the innocent kid?
If you don't "capriciously punish" the kids, you create a moral hazard that encourages parents to illegally immigrate (or steal cars, or rob banks).
I get your point. Yes and yes. But, as a terminal contrarian:
"The enemy army's officers keep commanding them to shoot at me! How about they take a principled stance on shooting people and shoot a few of their soldiers as a sign of fairness and good faith."
Interesting. That would be weird.
All the news sites seem to be hedging as well. “Possible shooting” “Trump rushes off stage after what sounds like gunshots”.
Why would they hedge like this. Anyone know?
One thing that stands out to me is that hitting his ear means that it was definitely not intended that he didn't die. That's too close to a kill shot to be a deliberate graze or not-fatal wound, too much risk even for an expert shot. So this was definitely a failed assassination, whoever did it.
Yes, this is the obvious conclusion of the ubiquitous extreme fearmongering about trump.
Nah, if it was a solitary 'pop' possibly, but the shooter mag dumped after the initial graze.
Currently debating with online gun nerds on what sort of weapon it was.
SOL
Yeah. I guess they are Shit Outta Luck.
No, it could mean that there was no bar on the US refusing to treat expatriates as citizens. I agree that it's an unlikely meaning but it doesn't render the clause surplusage.
Usually the meaning is taken to be that they were subject to US jurisdiction at the time of birth (or naturalization I suppose, but I don't see how they could not be) -- so not children of diplomats or invading armies. But I don't know if that was the original meaning.
