I game, but I would have been better off if I had never been introduced to the hobby. At most, some of the very best video games I have played (Metal Gear Solid, Fire Emblem, Days of Ruin, Cave Story, Iji, etc.) have provided approximately the same level of enjoyment, emotional release, and intellectual stimulation as a great movie or a good novel, except that they took much longer to do so (your average video game takes 20+ hours to beat, compared to 2 hours for a film and however fast you can read a book). At worst, games like Tetris and Civilization IV have consumed countless hours of my life through highly-optimized dopamine loops with nothing to show for it.
We're in adult entertainment territory here and I suppose I would disagree with this. Steam tells me I've played Cyberpunk 2077 for about 25 hours or so and I'd say I've enjoyed it a lot more than any movie. Maybe even more than 12x ~2 hour movies, though the median movie is bad.
The art direction in Cyberpunk is top notch and often inspiring and while some of the storylines are camp, some of them are really thought provoking and interesting. It's very good interactive sci-fi and I don't want it to end, though I'm near the end of the expansion pack now.
If I were playing video games 10 hours a week constantly chasing that high I might reconsider the category. But Cyberpunk is like an hour or two every few weeks right now. Seems fine.

Yeah I hear this. I've only played like 20 hours of the first or maybe second Civilization in my life, when I was a kid, and it taught me a bunch, but I could see how if this grew to 1000 hours between all of the sequels I'd feel like they were a loss.

Special Agent Fuentes was more than happy to pal around with Kanye when his ridiculous cringe mental illness antics were making the far right look like a bunch of unserious clowns. Now when Kanye knuckles down and independently puts out an actually effective piece of viral far right propaganda, Nick is suddenly hammering the “uhhh actually guys we have to distance ourselves from this, it’s makes us look low status”. Even though Nick’s own low human capital has been making the far-right look low status for over half a decade.

I thought generally unisex terms had become mainstream. At least in Hollywood, no one's idea of a traditional stronghold, terms like "actor" (rather than actress) were for a time preferred (I'm interested to see what will happen if a transsexual person --MtF or FtM--wins best Actress or whatever.)

I think you are writing in good faith, but I don’t think you understand how Protestant social dynamics have evolved. When Berry says “a Protestant nation,” he has a different idea what that means than a turn-of-the-twentieth-century counterpart might have had. While on a theological level Catholic vs. Protestant theological differences mean as much as they ever did, on a social level differences between theological liberalism and theological conservatism are much more salient. (This is strongly related to social progressivism vs. social conservatism and weakly related to economic leftism vs. economic rightism.)
If Berry got his dream, would he shutter Roman Catholic schools? No, I don’t think so. Would he shutter Jesuit schools? Maybe. But not because of Jesuits’ oaths of loyalty to the pope – because they are, in fact, liberal as heck.

Are there any (very) old school trance / EDM fans here?
I've never much liked EDM as I find most of the music dreadfully repetitive and boring. I do however have a soft spot for some early 90s trance due to being introduced to a handful of tracks via friends in the mid to late 90s that I later found to my surprise are now considered some of the OG classics (Paragliders, Cygnus X, some other Eye Q Records singles). I've recently been looking for some more music in that style and realized that something happened to the genre around 96-98 and the music before that is much more varied, interesting and has more "air" and space in the music. After that it's all supersaw cliches, sounds overstuffed and is really quite cookie cutter. So the question goes: Did something specific happen around 1997 to the scene, other than Roland publishing JP-8000 (which introduced supersaw)?
One of the classic tracks conveniently has the original 1993 version and a 1996 remix that demonstrates quite well what I mean.

Outside of Cali, Hawaii, Massachusetts and the NYC and DC metros the shall issue permits are genuinely shall issue- even Chicago has shall issue CCW. The biggest states are California, Texas, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio- and other than NYC(and that means not upstate) and California CCW permits in those places are available to any law abiding citizen who wants one.

Some actual literal nazis in the vein of 'gas the Jews like we actually literally mean that' have had their pro-holocaust songs banned everywhere, I think. I can't remember a case of an American being banned from literally everything though, so that might have only been after a German court order or something.

I don't know. My first reaction would be that it's because she's female, but I suppose girls and women do take to games. Just not her thing, I guess, and the vision of me sitting there gazing at a screen for hours was sufficiently far from the man I guess she thought she was involved with that she balked.
There is also an additional element, not generally mentioned because it really is too horrible for the average American, based or not, to want to speak out loud.
That total loss and pyrrhic victory were achieved in an environment where the soldiers involved could be confident that their homes and families were safely defended an ocean away.
Everyone will wake up into a whole different world the night that some American guerrillas hike into the mountains above a base and start dropping mortar rounds into base housing.
No American, government or otherwise, is prepared for that kind of war.

What really frustrates me though is that you extended the analogy so far as to throw parrots under the bus - funny for a few days? Note that Minecraft is also in this category; the fact that it's like this but without any of the optimization/active engagement in the gameplay makes me feel like I'm waking up from the Matrix. I really don't understand why people like this game at all (much less why the modding community exists, to say nothing about its size), though admittedly it's much easier to play with friends who don't have that... anxiety? about it.
Terraria puts more work into being actively entertaining to play and less intrinsically complicated, and it was always the better game.

The latter is much more important in this instance- sure, it's great if the flyover states have decent gun laws, but if 100 million people live in the Northeastern Megalopolis or California, where shall-issue CCW for the most part does not exist (and AWBs universal- their laws tend to be worse than Europe's are)... then that's still a significant problem.
Seconded. I would no more introduce a child to gaming than I would introduce them to porn, or gambling, or alcohol. Or social media, for that matter.
Video games are fundamentally synthetic work, presenting you with fake skills to master and providing you with illusory rewards. They are explicitly designed to be much more fun and addictive than any real work could possibly be. And maybe this would be fine if we lived in a post-scarcity world where there was no real work to be done, or if at the very least if you were already financially independent and romantically successful and there was nothing left for you to do but enjoy life. Anything short of that and video games become a permanent drain on your ability and willingness to get things done; "devourers of life’s potential" as jimrandomh called them.
Any purported educational benefits of video games are bogus. All research on transfer on learning is that it doesn't exist. You don't get good at X by doing completely different activity Y that arguably has some kind of underlying similarity to X; you get good at X by doing X and by training under somebody who is better than you at X.

Yet it happens routinely. There's a lot of Chinese on twitter. When I was playing certain games that were 'banned' in China, a third of the players were Chinese. They were all using VPNs.
