Because there certainly was enough evidence to convict him of interstate trafficking of a minor for sex (with himself), which is the killer charge in all of these cases and which Epstein’s lawyers would have told him guaranteed he was going to die in jail given the salacious public attention to the case, the fact that federal sentences don’t have more than a small reduction for good behavior / parole, and grandstanding by the prosecutors on the case.

He had lived like a billionaire for 30 years, private jets, satisfying his sex addiction with teenage models, doing whatever he wanted, and now faced not merely the prospect but the certainty of spending the rest of his life in jail - and not only in jail but in jail as a chomo, the worst of the worst, where (like Derek Chauvin) it was inevitable at some point that the guards would turn a blind eye and he’d get beaten, stabbed and so on (maybe even sexually violated) by other inmates.

Many people would kill themselves in that circumstance. It’s one of the least suspicious cases of suicidal tendency imaginable. If someone in that circumstance told me they were thinking of killing themselves I would literally think “yeah, that’s unsurprising”. It’s common for people facing charges like this who are out on bail to kill themselves. As for how he did it, he may have had his attorneys bribe the security team at the jail so they didn’t stop him.

What’s funny is there’s plenty of office drones who have full sleeve tattoos now

I'm making the argument against being stuck in a local maximum.

You probably mean minima.

One that relies on an international supply chain for its industrial production and the existence of a large enough empire to secure sea lanes. A type-2 technology.

Now, you define a "complex" drug as one that relies on international supply chains and "the existence of a large enough empire to secure sea lanes". I have to admit, this is a.. novel definition. Are you typing this on a "simple" device? The phone or computer you are using relies on a supply chain of such staggering, globe-spanning complexity that it makes Ozempic's look trivial. If you have taken a Tylenol in the past decade, there is an excellent chance it was manufactured in India or China and shipped across those same sea lanes. Unless you are a primitivist writing on handmade parchment, you are a beneficiary of these "complex" systems. It seems strange to draw the line here, at a medication that saves lives.

Saying diabetics are addicted to insulin because they would die without it is a tautology.

Oh, not all diabetics would die. They could, in an ideal world, life short but tortured lives! Is that a tautology?

So is saying men are slaves to biological necessity. These are realities well understood since antiquity.

So? Care to reproduce such arguments in full instead of waving at them?

You will not literally die without electricity or information technology. You seem to conveniently enjoy that particular fruit of modernity, while crying about this one.

Such addictions may well be natural, but they are cumbersome, and one of the common criticisms of modernity is that it has tricked people into novel addictions under the guise of liberating them from natural ones. I would have thought this line of reasoning to be popular enough as to not demand explanation. But here we are.

Once again, the number of people who eschew electricity or computers seems awfully small. Modernity is, on the whole, quite nice. It could still do with improving.

I could throw it all back in your direction, but I'm afraid I know too well the source of your confusion, and it is that you think American Psychologists among other colleges of experts have dominion over the English language and its conceptual space. As if they can declare the valence of things by fiat.

I am not an American Psychologist, nor do I think they have "dominion over the English language". I also happen to think you're twisting that poor thing to your own ends, with willful ignorance of your actions.

Spare me your sophistry. If you Google "definition of addiction", one of the first hits is the Wikipedia article for the same, which says that:

Addiction is a neuropsychological disorder characterized by a persistent and intense urge to use a drug or engage in a behavior that produces natural reward, despite substantial harm and other negative consequences

Ozempic doesn't cause "substantial harm". Any negative consequences are grossly outweighed by the upsides of not being obese, let alone diabetic.

Your definition is ridiculously archaic, and by that definition, one could be addicted to collecting stamps, to morning walks, or to breathing. You have diluted the word to uselessness.

But as we are now in a place that is open to people who are not adherents of this religion, I therefore enjoin you to consider that such authority is not self-evident.

I have no "authority" over you, and never claimed to. Short of mod-abuse by banning you, which I've never done and have little inclination to do. I still have little patience for such clearly confused, utterly sloppy thinking, with the added temerity of trying to take the moral high ground through word-play.

Ex-cons are often legally forced to work, too- employment is usually a condition of parole(which is probably most prison releases) and probation(which they usually wind up on).

There are certain jobs in America so shitty that they can get done by unfree labour(eg, out of the probation office- they are required to be employed) or by third worlders using the wage differential as the equivalent of working on an offshore rig, with no third option. Disproportionately, these are not jobs we can just do without(otherwise we probably would).

Not OP but his reputation was destroyed, and for someone like him what does he have left?

That’s because virtues are illegible and subjective but the benefits of leaderships are not

That’s because of it’s perverse incentives towards divorce and pre martial sex

Illegals and ex-cons. Apparently current-cons too; some meatpackers employ people on work programs from prisons, which is as close to slavery as you can get legally.

Child support payments are part of modernity, not social conservatism. Anyway, if people are discussing them they are discussing obligations owed to (in practice) women; the usual complaint here seems to be the obligation is one sided. (Which it is; the child support payments are owed even if the money is not used for the child or if visitation and/or joint custody rights are denied)

Meatpacking plants happily hire American citizens. It's just a shitty job, so staffing is always hard, so illegals get hired because they're used to shitty jobs.

I think this is spot on, which I why I’ve always had a lot of respect for the social philosophy of Confucius. He’s pretty explicit that every person in society not only is owed by his inferiors, but owes to his betters. Other systems in the past did the same, and even in the case of no formal system, traditional systems tend to informally promote tge idea of reciprocal relationships where I owe you and you owe me. I’m not even convinced that the specifics of the things owed actually matter; it seems to work fairly well as long as the duties and benefits are fairly equally distributed to everyone.

Are you afraid of the long term side effects?

Not particularly. It is not literally risk free, but rarely is anything we normally call "safe". The worst of the side effects can be detected, and are reversible if stopped. It's certainly far safer than the longterm effects of obesity.

How long will you be on it?

I bought six month's worth and took it with me about a month ago. So that's about the minimum I envision. If it works super well, I might stop, if I start gaining back the weight, then I have no real qualms about continuing indefinitely. It's not breaking the bank, the biggest pain would be either getting more shipped from India or picking it up on a visit. GPs here won't prescribe without a strict cutoff, and going private in the UK would be far more expensive.

Why is a Mexican meatpacker hired over the American one?

Why are you beating your wife?

My whole contention here is that illegals are doing that work because both illegals and Americans do not want to do it but only the latter have the skills to do better jobs.

An American worker cannot compete with a Mexican agricultural worker for the same reason he can't compete with a Chinese industrial factory worker

Odd, then, that American workers make far more money than Chinese industrial factory workers or Mexican agricultural workers on either side of the border.

It's the woke left vs the woke right. The woke left demands affirmative action for blacks so they can work in business, law, medicine, and government. Envy is felt toward whites for their higher-paying and better jobs. "The test is culturally biased!" The woke right demands set-aside jobs for Americans so they can pick fruit in the summer sun, being envious of illegal aliens for some reason.

I see lots of complaining about child support payments and the like, even by those generally skeptical of girlboss women's lib.

Why do you think MAGA was united against bombing Iran or about Epstein? Aside from the very-online right portion? (Anyway, if there's nothing there with Epstein, Trump can hardly produce it) But if this was true, it would demonstrate the opposite of your point -- that MAGA is NOT what Trump says it is.

Stephen Miller obviously advised Trump against any sort of farmworker amnesty, but Trump had to know he would. The question is why Trump would listen to Miller in this instance. And that could well be because MAGA really was fairly well united against that.

I think that association is more likely to be correlational, rather than strictly causal. The rates of sexual assault vary widely across India, and there are definitely large areas where you are reasonably safe from it, while also seeing small-time crooks get beatings.

Why do you think Epstein killed himself if he was hardly guilty of a crime and not wrapped up in any broader intelligence operation?

Yes on both counts.

The primary dividing line between members of this group is the degree to which Jews should be blamed for societies various ills.

Sounds unpleasant. Personally, I came to believe that some HBD claims are true by reading Scott Alexander on the Ashkenazi intelligence hypothesis. "HBD explains why there are many Jewish Nobel laureates without having to resort to conspiracies" is actually a major selling point for me. (Of course, I would also prefer if the left would give up to insist that any inequality of outcome was due to unfairness and in return people would shut up about HBD until we can CRISPR everyone.)

Reminds me of the Katie Cohen incident. Summary:

Katie was married to person 1. They either had an open relationship or were poly or something similar, and Katie was also dating person 2, who is married to person 3. Katie and person 2 agreed that if their birth control failed, Katie would abort. Katie got pregnant, decided not to abort. Person 2 cut off contact with Katie, Katie’s marriage to person 1 disintegrated for multiple reasons, and that divorce removed Katie’s primary source of financial support.

Katie then proceeded to portray herself as the victim in her tumblr, with lines such as:

Sometimes I wonder if Will ever thinks about how deeply he’s hurt Andromeda by rejecting her as his daughter. Or if his wife ever thinks about how much enduring pain she created, when she drew her defensive lines against me and my child, rather than let her husband be close to us. How one day Andromeda might be 40 years old, recounting that pain.

Huh, that was 9 years ago; how time flies. Andromeda must be 10, by now; I wonder how she turned out.

Are you raising your kids in the same socially conservative manner you were raised in? Would it bother you if your daughter had children of her own but was also a working professional?

No, in fact, MAGA got upset when it seemed he might and Trump backed off.

I'm not sure. I think it was actually almost entirely Stephen Miller:

In White House meetings, Miller took the lead in dialing back the president from moving toward anything that could be branded an "amnesty" program.

One idea that was shot down: a "touchback" program under which laborers illegally in the U.S. would have go back to their nation of origin, get a U.S. work visa there and be able to return here.

"Stephen is so hardcore that the president almost jokes about it, saying that, 'You could have a person who has been here for 20 years and has a clean record and everyone loves them, and Stephen will say deport them,' " according to one person who heard Trump's remarks.

Were it not for Miller, we might have something like an amnesty, or at least the policy of not arresting farmworkers would have continued.

Look at the other issues. MAGA was almost entirely united against bombing Iran, and Trump did it anyway. MAGA had a meltdown over Epstein, and Trump dismissed it. I'm skeptical that Trump cares very much about what the Online Right portion of MAGA (which as you say, isn't really MAGA) thinks.

that the Democrats support illegal immigrant child slavery on drug farms?

Is this controversial? The Democrats support having lots of illegal immigrants working at below market rates by violating labor laws. I don't think many mainstream Democrats would deny it, although they would probably phrase it differently. That naturally includes underaged workers.

It's the logical conclusion of having a large population of undocumented people. I think pretty much every Democratic politician who has any interest in illegal immigrants is at least aware that it's happening. Presented with a choice between allowing them to operate without the protection of labor laws or getting law enforcement involved and likely getting them deported, they are choosing the former in full knowledge of the consequences of that choice because they think it's the option that causes less harm.

Have any Democrats spoken up about the dozen antifa who organized that pathetic mass murder attempt on ICE agents?

This is a poor comparison. AOC is an elected official, the perpetrators of the "pathetic mass murder attempt" are a handful of deranged crooks.

If you polled a white person, maybe 50% white, 30% black, 20% everyone else.

If you polled a black person, maybe 80% white, 10% black, 10% everyone else.

So they claim. But the king is unlikely to be willing to trade places with the peasant, so it seems this is an uneven bargain.
