We’re also doing quite well in the homeland, in TFR terms. Looks like a symptom of blending with general western culture. On a scale, you can see that those most influenced by the west are also the ones who don’t have kids.

Initially I was about to say it’s a symptom of being more diasporic, but come to think of it the ultra-orthodox are actually the most diasporic in terms of their thought process, but also have the most kids, so it can’t be that alone.

If all you want is to improve your cardio, you definitely don't need a trainer.

Your gym will have a list, presumably you can ask for someone more into cardio and then try a few to see whose personality fits.

I bet there are a lot of people who hire a trainer once or twice a week for years (possibly decades) who wouldn’t have the motivation to do it by themselves, and in their case it makes a big difference.

Your conclusion doesn't really follow form your evidence. If the US government creating a panel to discuss something is enough to steer your opinion on how the future will go then you're destined to be very wrong about a lot of consequential things. Maybe I'm missing something, can you elaborate on why this updates you toward AI doom being a nothingburger?

edit: to be honest, if you think this says anything whatsoever about the risk from unaligned AGI it's pretty much conclusive proof you never understood, probably because you didn't try, the arguments for it.

If only all our trolls put in this much effort. Thumbs up for that alone.

Dandelions are a pioneer species, meaning they’re prolific breeders with high pollution resistance which spread easily and do best in disturbed environments.

Mowed lawns, roadsides, parks- these are disturbed environments exposed to the elements and with some level of pollution. That tends to suppress non-dandelion species more than dandelions, as well as make an inviting environment for dandelions. Where I live it’s common to have unmowed areas where bluebonnets are known to grow; the relative lack of disturbance for part of the year actually results in fewer dandelions.

Well done, I’ll give you an 8/10 for this.

So true. This goes for basketball too, if not more so.

Basketball has become much more of a team-sport in recent years, with elaborate and intricate pick-and-roll schemes. Women, with their better sense of empathy and social skills, should be better at reading defensive coverages and coordinating pick-and-rolls with each other.

This superior ability to read and coordinate carries over to the defensive side, too. Women can better read the offense’s facial expressions and body language, better communicate with their teammates as to who’s-got-who, when to switch, when to stay, when to double. Unlike men and their stupid egos, women are more courageous in being brave enough to ask for help and thus more willing to ask for doubles when they’re needed.

Everyone knows women contribute more emotional and physical labor to housework while men laze around the house or at work. So, in a playoff situation, women have the decisive advantage over men when it comes to sweeping experience.

Women may be shorter and slower than men, but that’s only due to socialization, the height-stunting effects of the patriarchy and internalized misogyny.

As the patriarchy and internalized misogyny lessen, who’s to say women can’t be as tall or fast on average as men or even taller or faster? If women aren’t as tall or as fast as men, that only means we have ways to go in rooting out societal inequities between the two sexes that get assigned at birth.

Plus, height can’t be that important in basketball. Stephen Curry is only 6’2,” and there are women out there taller than that. Nor can speed be that important; Jokic lumbers around like a glacier. There have even been successful NBA players that were both short and slow, like Jason Kidd on the championship Mavericks team.

Like Barca’s tiki-taka for women’s football, I believe the Seven-Seconds-or-Less Suns or 2017 Warriors will become the standard template of play for women’s basketball in the near future. Only on right-winged echo chambers like The Motte are people denialists about women being better than men at basketball someday. Unfortunately, these kinds of misogynistic attitudes are not limited to this site—and are in fact ubiquitous througout society—oppressing women and preventing them from being better than men at basketball and other sports. Men and their fragility get so triggered and feel so threatened by the thought of women being better than them at sports.

Why are dandelions so prevalent in cities, in absolute terms as well as in comparison to other weeds?

Most people get "personal trainers" in the context of lifting. I thought that applies here.

If its for a particular sport, then I don't really know. Are there not any pros or semi pros showing up to the club you paly at ?

Thank you! [insert gratitude hyper-stimulus tokens here]

I buy raw milk and make it into kefir. The fermentation process reduces my exposure to pathogens a little bit, but really I just don't care whether I get exposed. My immune system is very healthy.

Never.

Why lifting for a cardio heavy sport?

Mild symptoms complicate both diagnosis and treatment - much of what DBT is designed to help is for moderate functioning people (can be great) and low functioning people (where it isn't likely to).

Your diagnosis could be wrong, but I'd guess what's happening is that you are well enough, and the underlying biological reality of a borderline brain gets in the way sometimes.

To give the most obvious example, there was an emphasis on meditation, but all that accomplished for me was sending me catatonic.

However also possible you are what you are and don't meet criteria for anything.

Oh, I absolutely meet criteria for HFA/Asperger's and (currently) for depression. And I absolutely do have tendencies in the direction of borderline; I hit two or so of the nine with no question and there are quite a few with at least some question marks. The most obvious thing I categorically don't do is that I've never been a "splitter" (quite the opposite, to be honest), which means I avoid the most severe and characteristic borderline failure mode of "has both the tendency to incorrectly conclude that people are cardboard villains and the temperament for vigilante justice, causing repeated and unwarranted murder attempts and other hostile actions".

Don't. Just start lifting.

Source: Years of lifting and know personal trainers personally. They will just put you on a cookie cutter plan and spot your lifts. Something you can achieve with 15 minutes of googling and having friends who lift. Unless you are a professional athlete looking to squeeze out a 0.1% performance on the table, it's almost always going to be a waste of time.

And if you don't have enough drive to just start lifting without a trainer, you are not going to stick to it anyways.

When will women overtake men in soccer ability?

This is a ridiculous question. The answer is never. Seriously, it's such a bad question, I felt the need to downvote it.

And it's bad in particular because of the contrived argument you present.

My main argument here is that women have advantage over men in terms of social skills mainly because women find people endlessly fascinating.

Your assertion that women are supposedly better at team coordination because of inherently better social skills, is superficially true, but once again, does not apply to this situation whatsoever. And also it's naive in a really grating way. It's like you read some chapters of a fairly advanced book, but completely skipped other chapters.

Did you skip the chapter on greater male variability? Or the chapter on males having significantly better spatial-temporal reasoning? Or that men have a much higher status-driven competitive drive????

You know, just all the things needed to be the best at a team sport (something something men being hunters women being gatherers) that primarily involves lobbing a projectile at a target, in additional to the greatly male advantaged requirements for physical prowess?

Seriously NO. Just NO.

Nothing is stopping women from dominating esports either by this logic. But they tend to suck balls at it, because few women are autistically driven enough to strive to be the top 0.0001% at anything, or lack the mental fortitude to place winning over everything else (even if it means being mean to your teammates and not having friends or family).

Your model of soccer is wrong, your model of men and women is wrong, your model of competitive endaevours is wrong. Your model of how those things tie in together is wrong.

Looking at security cameras and seeing if something bad is going on was a job, or at least a huge part of a job. Driving a truck for hours along the highway was a job. Converting a text to bullet points and back was a job. Making thematically appropriate illustrations to text-heavy articles was a job. Writing articles based on a press release was a job.

See, this is where I thought AI risk would lie, if anywhere (apart from real people being stupid and greedy enough to think they could get AI to run the government or something) and I agree, this is where the actual application of AI is going to impact society.

The forecast fears for 'why we must make sure AI is aligned' were of AI getting out into the wild and taking over the fabric of global rule because now there was a rival intelligence to that of humanity, with its own cold alien goals and aims. What we have instead is chatbots that hallucinate and the people who love them.

Sure, the government is insisting that military applications are the danger zone, but it's the big tech corps that stand to make the money out of selling AI to you, me and the gate post who are the ones being invited to sit on this. Board, I mean. Northrop Grumman okay, as someone on a different thread here grumped about the military-industrial complex and how it gets its sticky fingers into all the pies going, but, uh, Delta Airlines?

Do you understand why people are not convinced that superintelligence won't happen just because AI is being used for military purposes?

No, I do not, and this is why I'm looking for love in all the wrong places seeking enlightenment on the gap between theory and practice. We are now seeing AI being put into practice, and it seems to be more towards my opinion of how it would be all along (dumb AI that is most risky because of the humans applying it, not because the AI has desires, goals, or fancies a grilled cheese sandwich but has no mouth and is really mad about that so the world is gonna pay), not the "the AI will be so smart in such a short time it will talk its way out of the box and take over" as per the early discussions in Rationalist circles.

This is not to diss the Rationalists, they took the problem seriously and addressed it and worked on it way back when it was only a maniac glint in a mad scientist's eye, it's just to say that the behemoth of public attention that is now lumbering towards consideration of the entire enchilada does not seem to be searching on the desk for that sticky note with MIRI's phone number on it.

When will women overtake men in soccer ability?

So right now there is no competition between men and women when it comes to soccer. There are various stories of high school boys annihilating their respective national pro women team. Just type in women's football/soccer compilation and you will see professional female footballers make mistakes that even half decent teenage boys wouldn't make.

However, who's to say this won't change in the far (/near?) future ?

First of all, women's football has only become a sport that has gained serious attention in the last couple of years. I'm sure men were not that good when football was first invented. It will take time for the most talented of female footballers to be found.

Secondly, football is as much as a game of skill and teamwork as a game of strength and speed. Men have an obvious inherent advantage when it comes to strength and speed and I don't see that gap closing anytime soon. But skill and teamwork is something that we don't really understand to the same degree as strength and speed. Strength and speed are easy to measure and they have an almost objective quality to them. Skill and teamwork however, are more nuanced abilities, more hard to measure, more "I know it when I see" type of ability.

My main argument here is that women have advantage over men in terms of social skills mainly because women find people endlessly fascinating. I think their ability to read body language and facial expressions far surpasses men. So much so that I think most men don't even realise how much better they are in this regard. It's akin to a 100 IQ person interacting with a 150 IQ person. The 100 IQ person might think the 150IQ person is a bit weird and may even recognise that the person is smart through socially sanctioned indicators of intelligence such as prestigious university, hard degree, cognitively demanding job. But the 100IQ person doesn't really grasp how vast the inner world of the 150IQ person is compared to theirs. The 100IQ person doesn't grasp how much more information the 150 IQ person is collecting and processing.

Anyway, I believe that women's interest in people could mean their ability to coordinate in soccer much higher than men's. I think given enough time women will be passing the ball in way we have only seen in glimpses on the men's side. I believe that Barcelona's tiki taka will become the standard template of play for women's football in the future. It might be so good that they will be able to beat men despite the strength and speed gap.

Is there anything more to your point here than "AI currently exists and may have military applications, therefore there will never be a dangerous superhuman AI", which is an obvious non sequitur?

My dears, my darling, my honey, my sweetie-pie:

Thank you for yours of the 28th inst., your reply has been received and noted and will be actioned whenever (if ever) I can be arsed to do so.

This is indeed a reaction, and is helpful for me to note and keep track of various opinions. So, shall us put 'ee down for "it's all copacetic", shall us?

How would y'all recommend finding a personal trainer?

I want someone local, and I have a fitness goal of being in better shape for an upcoming underwater hockey tournament. But otherwise I think I'm flexible. Just don't know what to look for or avoid.
