I mean taking her at her word that she really did want to help the country and defeat Trump, not being cynical and assuming she just wanted power for herself. But her argument is not logically coherent.
I think Biden is the only vice president who was elected president since the Bush senior in 1988.
Interestingly, both served only a single term.
Did she not have a single idea in four years?
I think it was much longer than 4 years where she didn't have a single idea.
None of the Kholins can read, nor can Sadeas. (Dalinar starts to learn later in the series.) Check the wiki if you don't believe me. Taravangian and (I believe) Gavilar can, and they do keep it hidden... but you understand just how extreme an exception those two are, right?
He already kinda stomached it when he chose her to be his VP, even though she was quite nasty to him during one of the primary debates. After he chose to drop out and give her the nom... he can't really do much, he doesn't have the power to control her campaign messaging. I guess he could publically come out and torpedo her back but I just don't see him doing that, especially the 82 year old Biden we saw at the end of the campaign.
My sister is a district manager for a bank chain and she says the machines they use to intake cash would sort those for return to the treasury for disposal a decade ago.
Very interesting. I wonder if different bank chains have varying approaches. This is not the first time I've gotten old bills from Chase, but this was by far the largest quantity of them (I once got a Nixon-era $20, which I saved, of course, even though it has no extra value).
If such a shooting happens, that flip-flop is basically guaranteed. So is the corresponding flop-flip.
I don’t see why either would contradict Goodguy’s statement about prevalence.
That's the excuse some Democrats keep using. But, his trip to Europe ended more than a week before the debate and he took it off to rest. That is as well rested as someone can be.
I could be wrong, like I said it was an impression I got over the first 3.5 books. I can't remember specific details but I felt like every Kholin that we spent any time with could read, and maybe it was just vibes but I thought Sadeas probably could as well. All of the ones we know for sure can read, hide it and pretend to be illiterate publicly, so it seemed plausible to me that other characters that we don't know as well could be doing the same. Taravangian can read and write. I am not really sure of any important noble men who are ostensibly Vorin where we get any sort of firm confirmation that they can't read, like an internal monologue moment lamenting their illiteracy or something.
Tarrant did write a manifesto though, The Great Replacement and it was reasonably entertaining
Hey, I thought the point of ice bullets was that they didn’t leave evidence!
Maybe I shouldn’t joke about this. It’s tragic, and disturbing, and speaks to an increased temperature in the lunatic fringe. Nothing good can come of it. As such, I’m not going to make excuses for the fucker.
Instead, I want to ask y’all what “the left” should be doing. What constitutes a “serious attempt to resolve” this situation? Does it involve public disavowals by the leadership? Cancelling any streamer stupid enough to say something edgy? The DNC taking responsibility for a terrorist act like it’s al-Qaeda? Maybe some time in the stockades, or a few televised executions? What would it take for you to feel like “the left” was making a good-faith effort?
Because this isn’t it. Whatever detente you have in mind, I cannot imagine that it involves writing bitter essays about the inhumanity of conservative scum, their unwillingness to admit that there is a problem, the inevitability of consequences when they continue to overstep. That wouldn’t be healthy. It wouldn’t feel like you were winning at all.
You are eager to treat “the left” as one organism, one will, a mouth speaking platitudes while its hand fumbles for the knife. How dare they create this situation? How could they normalize the idea that their political opponents were isomorphic to subhuman monsters?
Don’t you see the symmetry?
You recognize that “the right” is barely a coherent category, but you fail to apply that knowledge to the outgroup. How does this double standard possibly improve the situation? How can you equivocate between the normies who disagree with you and the psychopath who pulls a trigger?
If—when—the roles are reversed, “the left” is going to write pieces just like yours. They’ll try to hold you responsible for whatever fuckwit decided to bomb a clinic or shoot a Democrat. You’ll rightly protest that you never had any control over the kind of person who would snap like that. And we’ll move one step closer to chaos.
she didn't seem actively malevolent
On one hand, yes, I agree.
On the other hand, good God we've set the bar low.
Evaporative cooling of group beliefs? When the moderates and normies start voting red instead of blue, that increases the average extremism of the modal blue, accelerating the purity spiral?
We don’t have one yet on the level of other places. The Middle East has refined political murder and calling for the blood of your enemies into an art form. However, that doesn’t mean we don’t have a very serious problem with political radicalism and growing acceptance of violence. Those things exist and exist quite openly on very mainstream platforms including mainstream liberal cable news and radio and podcasts. When you keep yelling Nazi, comparing the ICE Raids to Nazi deportations, quote Anne Frank talking about Nazi deportations in her era and winking that Trump is doing this, and tells you that their Democracy is at stake, you can’t help but create the kind of environment where someone unstable will decide to Save Our Democracy with real bullets aimed at real people.
This wouldn't be particularly adversarial. The vaccines are kind of mediocre but fine. A bright spot in the covid pandemic is like the least stinky shit in a sewer. My disagreements are all with how states used vaccines to engage in yet more flagrant violations of human rights and violate medical ethics. I think we shouldn't invest into these tools, not as an isolated principle against mrna or viral vector treatments, but because of the risk the current institutions would use that investment just as they did in 2020-2022 for ill.
If the vaccines were released outside the context of lockdowns and other restrictions I would have nothing to say on them and there would have been no substantial opposition to them.
I have no insight to offer on your deeper problems, but in response to your core original question:
Should you be a liberal or a traditionalist?
You shouldn't seek consciously to align yourself with a whole grab-bag of beliefs. You should follow your conscience and your reason and your interests, and if that leads you to find that you align with people who use the label "tradition" or people who use the label "liberal," then that is convenient for labeling yourself to signal to others what your beliefs are, but it's not real. It's not a fact about you like your height or who your father was.
I think you'll find that it's not a dealbreaker for all women to be inexperienced, or even wanting to wait until you are in a seriously committed relationship to have sex. It will be for some, but of course they wouldn't be right for you anyway, so the best thing you can do is sincerely wish them well and part on friendly terms. But for the rest, you'll be ok. I was a virgin when I met my wife, and I was very up front about that on my profile. She said after the fact that she actually found it pretty refreshing to not have to worry that I was going to try to get her in bed on the third date or something, and that we could ease into having a sexual relationship. I'm quite certain she's not the only one out there, so try not to worry too much.
It's because federal agents are not very creative.
It's not even a good slogan. It's lazy. Throwing your life away without even being able to come up with something catchy and fun is... stupid.
I'm confused by the timing. 2015-2020 saw the Pittsburgh synagogue, Charleston church and El Paso walmart shootings despite conservatives being in power and the anti-Trump/nazi rhetoric being significantly more unhinged than it is today. 2020-2024, all I remember is the Tennessee trans school shooter despite the rhetoric against Fauci and plenty of other government officials being absolutely bonkers in right wing spaces (traitors, nooses, trials, you know the drill). 2025 has seen what, a half-dozen left wing events all at once? It doesn't seem to track with who's in power or how violent the rhetoric is.
I'd guess that during Trump I radicals of both stripes thought the majority of the country was on their side, whereas this time around, it certainly feels like the left is losing the normies. Shooting Kirk or ICE agents is retarded on both fronts, you're going to further alienate the normies and obviously not going to stop deportations.
Hitler with a D after his name would win the black vote by large margins.
Blacks have no reason to dislike Hitler. On every edgepost about a modest austrian painter there are a lot of black guys commenting. Rarely disapprovingly.
Hey man, I'm sorry you have had to go through all that. It sounds really difficult. I think you are doing really well to be where you are in life, given the unhealthy environment you were raised in. So, give yourself some praise if you can, you have had to endure a lot which you didn't deserve and came out reasonably ok. That says good things about you as a person.
For your specific topic with relationships, I would strongly encourage you to not pin your happiness on the idea of a relationship to bring warmth into your life. It is great to have a woman who loves you and who wants to be around you, but it isn't fundamentally going to fix things for you. That is, if you're struggling with depression and messy feelings about sexuality now, if you get a girlfriend you'll still struggle with those things just as much. You don't necessarily have to wait until you feel like those things are fixed before dating someone, because after all we are never finished projects. But don't make the mistake of thinking that dating someone is going to be a fix for them, because it won't be. They are separate issues.
I also would encourage you to not just go after whomever will have you. It seems like you feel like you can't be picky, but you must be picky to some extent when choosing a mate. Not picky about superfluous stuff (like how pretty she is or how big her breasts are), but picky about character for sure. Going in with an approach of "I have to take what I can get" is likely to mean you will settle for someone who is a bad fit for you, and you'll be miserable with that. So try to have some idea going in about what flaws you can and cannot realistically live with. It's easy to go "eh I can live with it" when you are in the heady early days of a relationship, but over the course of years that stuff will wear you down.
"I am the walking exigent circumstances you created" is an incredible line.
I have had to stop reading the Washington DC and Chicago subreddits, since they've been taken over by threads spewing unending withering contempt at ICE, at anyone who works for it or is even contemplating such, and at the very concept of actually enforcing immigration law.
Part of me wishes that those people actually get to see what happens when one billion impoverished Third Worlders descend on every urban area in the US, so those redditors can eat their words. Although I really hope I'll die before that happens (if it does).
