There's a deep sort of intimacy certain people get from text chatting that can't be afforded from talking over the phone or face-to-face. It's like a flase telepathy, where you can strip off pretense and persona and show the 'real you' to others. For a moment, however long or brief, you can fool yourself into thinking you're someone else, the real you, unburdened by the cruel tyranny of reality.
Of course, text chatting and correspondence is no longer very popular except in niche circumstance, and yet, here we are, with Chat-GPT and character AIs to fill the void...
Or, atleast, that's my supposition on the matter.

- You're absolutely right on this point. Another point of regulatory skirting in NYC: Amazon has four wheeled delivery machines with vestigial pedals on them and huge batteries and motors. These seemed to be helmed by slightly more "professional" drivers but are obviously dangerous vehicles hanging out in lanes designed for human-powered transport. The problem is that all of these exist on a gradient, and nobody wants to make the first move of creating an onerous regulatory regime on what was, just a couple of years ago, a simple machine that some nerds started riding as a hobby.

Shit like "sanctuary cities" which low-key secede from the nation and choose which laws they are going to follow and not follow stops like right now. You don't like the laws - vote for people that will change them, just ignoring them whenever you like should not be an option.
These two are tied together in my mind. Asking cities to tolerate an underclass that the feds refuse to deal with is absurd.
I don't want to talk to an AI, though. I want to talk to another Motte user who is using their mind to procure text generated by an AI in response to prompts generated by their mind.

This is like asking people why they like talking to friends or therapists about their life. That's what LLMs are to a lot of people -- an easy-to-access albeit somewhat low quality friend or therapist. As someone who has friends and doesn't need therapy, I also don't do that much, but I can understand why some might.
Also, LLMs are actually really good for generating NSFW if you're into that. Janitor AI with a Deepseek API hookup is excellent and quite novel.

So recently I was shopping for a new car for my wife. And a surprising number of new to late model BMW 3ers were sold with red leather interiors. That was a truly outre option in 2002, now it's pretty common, maybe 10% of interiors. And there were a few cars we saw that were almost specced how I would have wanted...but that red interior. My father in law would never stop telling me it looked too Puerto Rican.
And in general, that's a pretty accurate rap: in Puerto Rican neighborhoods, houses are brightly colored, stores are brightly colored, more cars are brightly colored, clothes are brightly colored. Hell, I wear a navy blue Yankees cap, most Puerto Ricans around here wear Yankees caps in bright red or orange.
So how much of this is just ethnic distinctions, or ethnic/class based identity formation? I don't paint my house walls bright orange, or buy a car with red leather seats, or paint my business exterior green and blue, because people would make fun of me for looking puerto rican.

Then if we're clearly going to make it to the stop sign well before anyone else, it's best just to blow through. Otherwise, the driver is going to be waiting far longer if we come to a complete stop.

I'm one of those "won't go to the doctor unless a limb falls off" guys, so I was in my 30s before I realized that doctor prescriptions are sent to a specific pharmacy, and you cannot buy the prescribed medicine from any other pharmacy. If you want to buy your prescribed medication from a different pharmacy, you have to talk to the doctor (or, more likely, the nurse that is being supervised by a doctor) and ask them to send the prescription to a new pharmacy. What the actual fuck?!
It's shit like this that convinces me to stick with OTC pills until the day I die.
TRON bike lighting update
Stuff finally came in from Ali and I got to work doing more proof-of-concept.
Firstly I found the batch of clear heatshrink tubing from Ali was too big. It never shrank down enough to provide the weather protection I needed for the WS2815 solder points, so I gave up and ordered something slightly smaller off of Amazon and then a bigger batch of it off of Ali to arrive at some future date. The smaller clear shrinkwrap tubing arrived 2 days later and worked well.
Of course I had to buy a new heat gun too since the one I was using died. And by that I mean melted itself. You have one job, Harbor Freight heat gun: don't melt yourself.
Then I got around to trying to control COB LED strips. These are much brighter and meant for visibility during the daytime rather than "art". I ended up with way too high gauge but-can't-hurt-right MOSFETs that, when I finally sat down and soldered them and put together like a half dozen different wires between the MOSFET, power source, breadboard, ESP32-C3 and COB LED actually worked fine the first time. I was able to turn them on and off entirely via software and then adjust to dimming them via software. Sweet.
I'm using white COB LEDs but I note they make RGB COB LEDs which seems like so, so much more wiring but the effect might be worth it. They're so bright! We'll see how the WS2815s handle the heavy lifting for now. I guess.
I think nothing really stands in the way of going into full production at this point. Production here meaning put WS2815 and COB LEDs on helmets and the cargo bike and seeing if I can coordinate them via a smartphone app via BLE. Then I guess branching out to vests and other accessories.
I am trying to decide between putting 18650 batteries on each helmet or just kinda having a bigger battery on the cargo bike that each helmet's logic board plugs into via barrel jack adapter. As long as they're not screw-tightened together it shouldn't be a strangle/whiplash risk.
Also I just randomly found these RGB LED backlights on Adafruit and I'm looking for an excuse to incorporate them.
Also, I'm really enjoying how tiny the ESP32-C3 chips are and something about them being RISC-V makes me feel like I'm finally getting the future I was promised.

Homies: Ride or Die update
Spent awhile trying to rotate the wheels on the car model while it was in motion.
The first problem was figuring out how to isolate the wheels from the model mesh. I was about to rig some scheme where I would take shots in the dark to come up with relative points in the centers of each wheel and then try to eyeball a definition of a cylinder that would fit them, then write some selector that would pick all of the submeshes contained inside of the cylinder and then I could apply transformation matrices just to those that will match the spin of the wheels at any given time. But then I realized the model file actually already identifies the wheels and I could just process the "group" directive. With the hard part done, it was a trivial but surprisingly annoying amount of transform math to translate (ha!) into code.
So, the wheels spin. Now I'm trying to get them to also turn with the steering. Should be able to use most of the same code, just rotating the wheels around a relative Y axis instead of a relative X axis, but of course I'm missing some detail and they barely move even if I have the car turning 30 degrees at a time.
