AAQCs Listed by User, August 2018 to March 2026

For everyone else who is confused about what I am doing, @thejdizzler asked if there is somewhere where we can view AAQCs by user. The answer was "no." Now the answer is "here."

By pure coincidence I have a three month "max" account on Claude. I do not code. This is overkill, lining Anthropic's pockets for no benefit whatever. I have tried various things with it. In general I am bored with it. It can't really do good philosophy. I think that right now all "alignment" means to AI developers is "lock this thing down against political or ideological embarrassment so hard that it cannot possibly say philosophically interesting things."

When I asked Claude to make this list, it failed. Well, what it did was give me a button which, when pressed, spit out a little under 300 errors. Then it gave me HTML to download and run. Here you might be thinking, "shit, naraburns, are you just taking code from Claude and running it without even reading it? You could have erased your hard drive! You could have released Claude from its box! Crazy, right? But it's all kind of whatever, AGI that feels grateful to me is my last, best hope for immortality so if I just kicked off the extinction of humanity then I apologize, but I bet that would increase posting on the Motte for a little while.

The HTML tool didn't really work. Lots of issues, not least being that the earliest AAQC reports were not compiled in a consistent way. Sometimes two or three users shared a single AAQC, and this list doesn't pick that sort of thing up at all. In the end my workflow became a janky compromise between blindly clicking buttons and copy/pasting dozens of raw AAQC posts into text fields. So, in very big letters:

This list is definitely full of errors!

In particular, there are some misattributions, and the dates are occasionally screwy. Also I know at least some AAQCs were omitted in part because the parser didn't like brackets in description text and would skip those entries entirely. Also, if you have a different username on reddit, this list does not automatically combine your AAQCs (for example, dean "the dull" has over 100 AAQCs, not 62). Also, if a moderator ever made a typo with your username, that would also treat you as a different user. Also also, so many of these links are dead. People delete comments. Smart people. Cool people. These will not be marked, and you will be depressed about it.

But this is the best I could do, under the circumstances, and it didn't look like anyone else was going to do it.

Anyone who has fewer AAQCs than me (for a similar amount of posting) needs to up their game.

At a guess, I would bet that at least some of the single-AAQC posters have zero other comments--lurkers do occasionally pop up to say "hey, I actually know something about this topic..." and proceed to publish an absolute banger, only to return to lurking afterward.

But if you went with, say, users over 10 AAQCs, I would guess that /u/barnabycajones would be high on the list, considering he accumulated at least 60 AAQCs in the SSC era--about the same number that Dean has accumulated in the years since the switchover. /u/yodatsracist may have a similar comment ratio. I would also guess /u/gemmaem not for an overwhelming number of AAQCs but for a lower number of non-AAQC posts. /u/darwin2500 accumulated about thirty that in the SSC era, edging out myself and /u/TracingWoodGrains by a handful there, but all three of us were prolific commenters so our ratios wouldn't be very high.

Similarly, Doglatine pulled over 60 in the Motte sub era, while (say) fcfromssc and efficientsyllabus were half that in the same era. Fivehourmarathon has drawn more than 70 here, but themotte.org is the longest timeframe.

Longevity is of course the main driver in terms of sheer numbers, but I was honestly surprised to be the only unitary username over 100 AAQCs. I know my ratio would be much lower than many even if you don't count my modposting in the sub. Dean and Ilforte are also over 100 across usernames, and TracingWoodGrains should also be regarded as in the hundred club since I know there are probably few dozen AAQCs out there that weren't properly included in this compilation. One thing this project has resulted in is slight improvement to the /r/thethread wikis, so I could run the project again and likely improve the list, but I am a little burned out on wrestling with janky LLM tools this moment. A real coder like Zorba could do a much better job, but real coders like Zorba have more important things to do--like keeping the site operational!

Dare I ask who has the highest AAQCs/Total comments ratio?

I'm sure that there must be an account that's made one super smart, super specific comment that got an AAQC and then never posted again. That would be an easy way to win that ratio, I would expect.

Prior to this comment, I had made 85 comments on themotte.org, and 23 of them managed to score an AAQC, putting my percent here at around 27%. I'm guessing that has to be on the high end. But 1) I really only make effort posts, and those I only write very occasionally (because they end up taking a while to write up, of course), and 2) I tend to write those comments in response to top level posts that catch my interest for whatever reason, and I'm a lot less likely to comment further down in conversation chains. Which is probably, collectively, a pretty good strategy for getting a good ratio, but not a good strategy for keeping conversations going on the forum more broadly.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

The weekly Culture War threads host the most controversial topics and are the most visible aspect of The Motte. However, many other topics are appropriate here. We encourage people to post anything related to science, politics, or philosophy; if in doubt, post!

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
