Culture War Roundup for the week of December 25, 2023

This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.

Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.

We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

  • Shaming.

  • Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.

  • Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

  • Recruiting for a cause.

  • Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.

In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

  • Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

  • Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

  • Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

  • Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

A thought from somewhere else that might be worth a take:

"What control do they not currently have though? They’ve captured absolutely every American institution in the country, the have the entire media complex as their first and foremost weapon against the populace, they largely have the judicial on their side that they have absolutely no qualms abusing against their enemies for any reason, they have the entire federal government under their control and every branch that comes with it - the FBI, CIA, IRS, you name it, and they have control over it.

They have the backing of practically every every single corporation on earth at their helm corporations larger, more powerful, and wealthier than fucking countries. Now combine all the top 10,000 largest global corps and show me one that doesn’t operate essentially at the behest of their orders.

They largely have the entire military industrial complex under their watch to sicc on the world and fund any and all wars they’d like, at the expense of millions of natives of those countries, they have the pharmaceutical complex under control, educational system, and I can go on and on.

They have Canada under their thumb, the EU, Australia, NZ, and whatever other western country you’d like to name.

They’ve become deranged, tyrannical, and authoritarian beyond what anyone ever foresaw, all whilst being cheered on.

And let’s not forget, they have a global army at their disposal, every sickening non-profit you can name, and so on and so forth.

No one has any ability to stop them."

Who is 'they'? (It's not the Jews - that's boring)

The correct answer is 'capitalists'.

The real answer is probably 'wokeists' or some similar garbage.

If it actually is capitalists and this was a fakeout, good job I guess.

Capitalists don't have the media at their disposal, nor do they have the FBI, CIA, or IRS. And certainly not the educational system. I'd even question whether they have companies, since companies are perfectly happy to push for measures that help themselves but hurt capitalists in general.

(Incidentally, notice how rants against Jews tend to look exactly like rants against capitalists?)

The media is for-profit corporations, not clear how capitalists could not control them under our current economic model, that's basically definitional.

The FBI, CIA, and IRS all enforce laws written by and/or pursue agendas defined by the legislature and/or executive, both of which are heavily influenced by capital.

Any rants of the form 'X controls Y' will necessarily have a lot of similarity to each other. Those rants are correct when they are directed at a thing that does control Y, and wrong when directed at a thing that does not control Y.

The media is for-profit corporations, not clear how capitalists could not control them under our current economic model,

The control they have is very narrow. Sure, the owner of the New York Times is not going to lobby to get the New York Times nationalized. You can call that control if you wish. But pretty much every bit of control that is not very directly related to keeping the Times in business is to promote the left (and this includes measures that increase government power but help the Times against competitors.)

Jews would have been my first guess.

Second guess would be something like SJWs.

The ruling class of the American empire, evidently. They're the only group that qualifies to all these descriptors.

Mutational load.

The "Cathedral," of course, in all their Puritan-descended fervor.

Source for others who are curious. I was expecting that leaving out the link was to make a 'gotcha' out of this, but it doesn't seem so.

I guess it comes across as a gotcha in his(?) eyes. You're supposed to find it shocking that anyone would say such things.

Yeah, but here that's pretty much Tuesday (and usually draws a ban, as it did)

Appears to be, as you might expect, the progressives.

This is another bad top level post.

I warned you last week for this exact thing so this time its a 3-day ban.

Just wanted to say that I agree with this 3 day ban. I know you guys get a lot of crap for bans, but this one is actually reasonable (especially the time).

Good bot.

The devil.

Yeah, unironically agree with this one. One of the worst mistakes of the Enlightenment was deciding that Evil and the devil don’t exist.

“The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist”—Charles Baudelaire (the sentiment is older than him though)

I believe the original source was the famously bloodthirsty Hungarian monarch Keyser Söze.

I'm gonna guess it's 'teh gayz' this time.

Nah, seems more like The world to me.

That's "ZA WARUDO" to you, Jojo.

Capital.

Moloch, to be more precise.

The volcano demon.

Isn’t this just mainstream consensus thought or something even broader like people. There is always going to be a popular consensus I’m not sure if it’s possible to defeat.

By definition 'something' always wins and comes to dominate.
