This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:
-
Shaming.
-
Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.
-
Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.
-
Recruiting for a cause.
-
Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:
-
Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.
-
Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.
-
Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.
-
Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.
On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

I generally stay away from reddit's /r/conspiracy board because it often just repeats what's been said in these threads a week late. But, I believe we have, perhaps, the funniest one I've seen in a long time.
Admittedly, I read the "Epstein didn't kill himself" angle as though he was murdered. But the latest iteration of the meme takes a hilarious new angle- that Epstein was taken out of prison, replaced with a dead lookalike, and now has grown out his beard and wears sun glasses, with an idf security detail following him around everywhere.
The clincher here, the funniest bit of the claim, if you will, is that the fortnite account, littlestjeff1, is his. To wit: that is in fact an active account and has been active through 2025 into today.
And, given that his xbox live account had been banned, and that there are references to littlestjeff1 - in the files (a YouTube purchase shares that exact name) lends credence to the theory.
I'm still skeptical, as it ascribes to netanyahu/idf intelligence a level of power that seems unreasonable on multiple layers, but it would be the very, very funniest writing of this season if the thing that gave away his cover was a public (now-private) fortnite profile, of all things.
Come on Jeff, if you're really alive, at least switch to Apex Legends.

There is definitely some reason to think that Epstein was not just some "random rich lech", as @ABigGuy4U phrased it. However, here's what I do not understand about the "Epstein was doing blackmail for an intelligence agency" theory: if he was, why was his spycraft so poor? My understanding is that Ghislaine Maxwell would often approach random teenage girls in public and offer them money for supposed massages. Epstein and Maxwell would even get girls to go recruit other girls for them. If that is indeed how they operated, to me it seems like an incredibly risky way of running a blackmail operation. Surely if you have access to enormous funding there must be safer ways to procure underage girls than to approach random American girls in public locations. And if this wasn't part of the supposed blackmail operation - if Epstein was both running a blackmail operation and occasionally having sex with random American girls just for the fun of it - well, if I was the person ultimately in charge of the operation, I would either get him to stop running these risks or I would shut the whole operation down. There is just no need to pluck American teenage girls off the Florida and NYC streets for a blackmail operation. A wealthy man could surely get all of the underage girls he could possibly need for blackmail from countries where procuring them is less risky. Unless, I suppose, having sex with specifically first-world women was part of his clients' fetish. But even if that was the case, I'm sure that there are safer ways to get American girls than what Ghislaine is said to have been doing.
I think the theory generally is that they set Epstein up as a fall-guy who may generally have not been aware of his role and so his behavior actually does accord with just being a "rich lech" not a "Israeli super spy", because in some sense that's what he actually was. Perhaps Epstein wasn't even aware he was running a blackmail operation and his island and plane were outfitted with recording devices without his knowledge. In his mind he was just a rich playboy having fun and mingling with the rich and famous. I think according to this theory Ghislaine was definitely aware of the situation and that she was working with Israeli intelligence. Consider this. Imagine they had used some secret channel to acquire girls. If Epstein got arrested presumably they would start asking the girls, looking into their backgrounds and it would become obvious they were acquired through some channel that would not be available to an ordinary rich lech.
Well hold on, if Epstein didn't really know anything then wouldn't this remove the need to keep him quiet in the first place, and thus nullify the starting point of all this theorizing ie "that 'suicide' was sketchy, clearly some spooks took care of him to clean up after themselves"?

Also if you want white girls, the major overseas countries for that are all in Eastern Europe which has a very heavy FSB presence.
Epstein did in fact source a large number of girls from Eastern Europe and Russia - this stuff is all over the emails.

I am very skeptical, and I generally agree with @2rafa's criticisms on there being no smoking gun for the most salacious accusations, just an (increasingly abundant) amount of suggestion and innuendo. Especially since I do believe in similar heterodox views, very hesitant to put much weight on a really outlandish claim. With that said these are probably the five strongest pieces of evidence I am aware of for the claim Epstein is still alive:
Tentative conclusion: Maybe 5% chance, I hesitate to give larger confidence to the theory because it's not something I would want to be wrong about, I have no need for it to be true to really change my opinions of the overall situation. Definitely enough there though for people to plausibly ask questions and these points should be investigated to increase public trust in the face of warranted public distrust.
Edit: Fortnite responds, was a name change by a user: https://x.com/FortniteStatus/status/2019817972831780952 - More than plausible explanation.
Edit 2: Polymarket also currently gives 5% chance, didn't see that before nice: https://polymarket.com/event/is-jeffrey-epstein-alive-498
Re. the Internet Archive, is there any evidence that his profile page was archived at any point prior to now, or is the argument merely that "his profile page isn't currently in the archive, therefore it was removed"?
Most pages excluded from the Internet Archive will have a clear message saying so. Exhibit A: https://web.archive.org/web/2/https://kiwifarms.net/
The ArchiveTeam wiki (no affiliation with IA) maintains an unofficial list of excluded sites and pages. The only exclusions that don't give an explicit message are so-called "time exclusions" in which certain time periods are excluded while the rest of the archives remain accessible.
So far the only URLs I've seen that people claim to be Epstein's account give the normal error message rather than an exclusion error message.

It’s circumstantial evidence, but we’re reaching “Scott Peterson switching all his dating profiles to ‘single’ 12 hours before his wife went missing” levels of circumstantial evidence. There are pictures of his private jet parked at military airfields with Blackhawk helicopters in the background. Members of parliament are making statements in session about how they can’t release information about Epstein because it would be embarrassing to the UK, the United States, and an anonymous third country. The idea that he was just some random rich lech is getting ridiculous to the point that the people arguing for that possibility are transparently acting in bad faith now.

Granted, this belief costs them very little in real life since anyone who believes it is probably not making any changes in their life based on it. However, once someone is in the "this dead guy was replaced with a body double" (Epstein, McVeigh) or "every single violent happening is actually an elaborate construct of the US intelligence agencies" (see the website of Miles Mathis) mindset, it's pretty pointless to engage.

I have to be honest I don’t understand how Epstein had so many people in his network. Musk is a very big fish. Epstein doesn’t have a tech company or any known business. Plus pedo rap sheet. How does he even get Musks email?
If I had to pick 3 people to have dinner with it “of recent vintage” I guess I would pick Trump, Musks, and Epstein. It’s like a video game where everyone else is a NPC but those three are everywhere.
He was extremely sociable and apparently didn't do much actual work, so automatically had a big network by virtue of being there for people, while the other rich people in the rich people network, would often be very busy.
He had very loose morals, but would not tell on others, so rich people with a dark secret like affairs with Russian women or those having a rapist son, could have him as the only friend that they dared to trust with those secrets and to ask help from.
He had a big island and invited lots of people over, where they could safely relax and meet away from journalists and such.
He was constantly working to expand his network with big names, so just by virtue of having a goal of having a big network, he had an advantage over those not working towards that goal.
He opportunistically engaged in all kinds of deals and schemes.
At a certain point the size of his network became a draw in itself.

I don’t think it’s impossible. The Epstein network had blackmail on all the right people and friendships with all the right people. Epstein had at least a passing interest in video games (he opened up a trial account for WoW) and emailed five 4chan threads over as many years, indicating familiarity with “youth” activity. If anyone could have his death faked, it would be him. And how would he spend his time? He is clearly a dopamine fanatic, so the only answer is video games. Very implausible, but not impossible.
It's true that it doesn't violate the laws of physics or entail a logical contradiction.
A lot of people would have considered “close friend and agent of the Rothschilds ran a sexual kompromat operation that possibly ensnared two American presidents” to be as impossible, if not more impossible, than faking a death, so who knows?

If they were going to kill him, they’d have done so before he made it back to New York to be arrested by the FBI.
If they were going to fake his death, they’d have had his plane ‘crash’ or have him die quietly of a heart attack three months before the FBI was ready to arrest him.
If your response to this is “yeah but doing it in a Manhattan jail makes it less suspicious”, clearly that isn’t the case, a locked-room mystery is so much more exciting. If Epstein had died (or “died”) in January 2019 in his Paris mansion of a heart attack none of this global scandal would ever have happened. You really can’t overstate this; the powers that be are powerful enough to perform a perfect exfiltration from a high rise high security Manhattan jail, pay off or threaten everyone involved, find a body double, hack every camera or disable them etc etc, but they can’t get a heads up on an FBI investigation, despite them being so leaky that even mid level mafiosos usually know they’re coming? Nah.
As an aside, old people have vastly poorer reaction times. Epstein would be in his 70s; gamers in that age range don’t really play shooters anymore, they play MMOs, RPGs, strategy games.
A conspiracy theorist could respond with the following:
You’re assuming "they" had the option set you think they had. Killing him before the NYC arrest might have been harder rather than easier: he had private security, controlled environments, and (depending on the timeline you pick) he wasn’t yet in a federal facility with the same leverage points.
You’re assuming the goal is "least suspicious" -- but it might be "most explainable". A heart attack in Paris is less controllable since it invites autopsy uncertainty in a foreign jurisdiction, questions about private doctors, and paper trails. On the other hand, "suicide in jail" comes with a template of negligent guards, broken cameras, and bureaucratic errors. It's not "less suspicious", but it is "more deniable". Suspicion can be tolerated if it can't be proven.
You're treating the FBI as a monolith, whereas it's actually factional. Not everyone in law enforcement is on the same team. "They" might not control the early stages. The "heads up" might come late, after the arrest is already imminent.
etc.

Although "it's someone other than Epstein playing" does weaken the case for him still being alive, it doesn't directly imply that he's not in control of the account. Who's to say, after all, that he didn't have some Gen Alpha girl playing Fortnite right in front of him?

This is the first time it's occurred to me that I might want to enjoy shooters while I can. Never really been my thing but the thought of not being able to do it is kinda sad.
You can definitely still play shooters or most other reaction-based games when you get older, you just shouldn't be doing PVP or extremely hard difficulties if you want to have a good time.
Honestly even PVP can be done. Frankly, a lot of people online are bad (or were when I used to play). If you practice, you can probably be good enough to not be at the bottom of the pile even at 70. But you're not going to be top tier, it's true.
Another possible angle here is that there are shooters which are pretty slow paced, like Holdfast. It equalizes reaction time a lot when you can only fire one round every 30 seconds. Granted that's an outlier in how slow it is, but the point is that different shooters can have very different levels of twitch reflexes needed.
You're right. I'm used to PVP shooters using lobby balancing like TF2. In the days of ubiquitous skill-based matchmaking the penalty for being bad is far lower. A septuagenarian won't make it very high on the ranks, but most games can provide a steady stream of drunks, stoners, and Gamer Girls for them to feel good enough to keep playing.
I wonder if, as gamers get older, you would be able to have a TF2 (or similar game) server populated entirely by old people. That would also neatly solve the reaction time issue if you could pull it off. It's not a handicap if everyone is handicapped the same!

If you're a young (gamer) guy, I strongly endorse getting good at shooters at least once. I was the kind of nerd looking down on it until I got really into one (BFBC2) due to friends, and it really is very different, intense and fun. It really gets your adrenaline up. I still have a lot memories burned into my mind.
I'm so old that I played Counterstrike in its beta release days, and man were those good times.
Yeah, it was a different world playing against your friends on the LAN. I don't play modern shooters, but I do miss that.
I second this so, so much. Nothing better than a nice big LAN party with a good FPS for all night mayhem!

From the thread, you can even see that the Fortnite season playtime activity for the account drops greatly during the time he was in prison. The account went private within hours of discovery. Archive.org snapshot was taken down too.
I believe it.
So, Jeff is public enough that he names his Fortnite account after his island and himself, but privacy conscious enough that he immediately goes private as soon as he’s “discovered” (and not when the files were released, by the way, but when gamers online start talking about it)?
This reminds me of the maxwellhill conspiracies, in that there's a sort of semi-flattery by those who posit them that evil world-controlling billionaires do the same things for fun that the lazy and unemployed members of /r/conspiracy do. (Also in that they are retarded and the smallest amount of skepticism derails them instantly)
The FBI cited posts by maxwellhill when they indicted Ghislaine Maxwell - though that said I'd actually agree with you when you say that the FBI are retarded and the smallest amount of skepticism derails them instantly.

Why wouldn't they? The rich billionaires, celebrities and world leaders all use the same social media as the rest of us. Everyone from Elon Musk to Kim Kardashian to Keir Starmer to the Rock is on the mainstream social networks. Even with Reddit, we know lots of famous people who use the site. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rick Astley, Colorado Governor Polis. Anthony Bourdain was using it a lot before he died, he has an account created 11 years ago! And those are just the ones we know, I'm sure a lot of them have alts for saying things without risking PR problems.
Likewise we know the rich and powerful and influential use the same media we do. From hollywood movies to the top charting music, they're using Netflix and Spotify like the rest.
So why not games too? Elon Musk plays Diablo, AOC used to play League of Legends, there's a report that Bashar Al-Assad is spending a lot of his time in Moscow just playing a bunch of online video games nowadays. In fact rich people also playing games is what I expect. They're the demographic of whales who can just keep throwing money at something without care..
I would love to find out someday that Bashar al-Assad was the temporary Emperor of Tamriel for a month in Elder Scrolls Online, holding the city against all attackers through keen tactical plans and good structural strategy.
This seems unlikely, considering his record of managing the war in Syria....

Maybe some hacker stole Epstein's Fortnite account after he died? Seems like a really-bad idea, but still more plausible than him being alive. I would still tend toward the "coincidence" explanation, myself.

At some point I have to start being incredulous and asking, if Epstein really was alive, is he going to blow his cover by playing on his Xbox account of all things? I don't agree with censoring archive snapshots because it makes it look like there's something to hide rather than transparently showing that there's nothing there.
The impression from Epstein's many emails is not of a particularly smart man, so I could buy it.
I could also buy it, but surely if this was true then the intelligence agencies would quickly track him down and capture him, then announce his recapture.
Why would they do that? The intelligence agencies went out of their way and pulled their weight to make sure he wasn't prosecuted or spent any significant time in jail via Acosta - why would they make more work for themselves by actually finding and capturing him again?
If Epstein was still alive, he'd basically be public enemy #1 with how much discourse there is about declassifying his files. It would be a good look for them to recapture him especially since the Epstein files have implicated high-ranking figures like the president of the US.
The agency has been going out of their way to avoid capturing him and avoid prosecuting him. They have actively destroyed evidence and apparently haven't even investigated the Zorro ranch at all. It would be good for the public if they were to capture him, but when you think about the actual ramifications of this case being fully prosecuted it becomes extremely obvious why they wanted to let him continue sex-trafficking children and blackmailing politicians as much as they could.
If they really wanted to not prosecute him then they would have... not prosecuted him. Not arrested him or put him in jail. The cops don't have to pull over every speeder on the highway, they get to pick and choose and they could have turned a blind eye to him if he was really that powerful. How does this viewpoint align with the theory that he was assassinated because he had
information that could lead to the arrest of the Clintonsdirt on people? Surely if it turned out he was alive after all, the Powers That Be would do everything in their power to at least arrest him or kill him for real.More options
